金元宝分为两种，一种是真正的流通黄金，其含金量在30%—80%不等。另一种相当是花钱元宝，主要用于祈福镇宅只用，发行量比较少，仅限部分地区出现。一般流通中的金元宝没有花纹图案，所以花钱的金元宝按照流通的金元宝样式制作，在原有的基础上加上寿字纹，用于祈求延年益寿。
