2. New Habit: Instead of just doing the work, ask, “Am I the best person for this?”

How often: Every time you dive into work

This is another common bad work habit. Often, you may think, “It’s faster if I just do it myself.” This may be true in the short term, but by doing it yourself and not delegating it, finding someone else to do it, or just asking the question, you’re skipping an essential step that could maximize efficiency or give someone else the opportunity to own that responsibility. By pausing and increasing your awareness, you begin to own how you work versus feeling that the work owns you. It’s also a way to focus on team effort versus your individual effort.

3. New Habit: Instead of defaulting to your own idea, ask, “How can I leverage the expertise of others?”

How often: Every time you start a new project

This is another shift in perspective from thinking you have to have all the great ideas to thinking collectively and leveraging others for their strengths and each of their Zones of Genius. By pausing and thinking about your idea, project, or goal and then thinking about your team’s skills, you build the quality of your work output while also building relationships. Feel free to use this Zone of Genius Quiz. Better yet, share it with your colleagues, find out what their Genius is, and seek them out when needed.

4. New Habit: Instead of waiting for others to tell you what to do, ask, “How can I own my own performance development?”

How often: Every week

This habit of looking back on each workweek is a game changer (use this Zone of Genius Tracker to help!). Not only does it help you ensure you’re being who you are and operating in your Zone of Genius regularly at work, but it also helps you measure your confidence, mental health, and effectiveness over time. Rather than feeling that you’re a victim of circumstance, you’ll have the ability to identify patterns of what’s working and what isn’t and gain the confidence and clarity on how to navigate change.

If everyone on your team implements these four habits, you’re bound to reach your goals in half the time.
