0:30-1:20

I would like to talk about some environmental ideas this week. A lot of environmental initiatives are also very innovative.

1:27-2:27

A supermarket in Thailand is using banana leaves in place of disposable plastic bags, and banana leaves are quite suitable for this use. We in general use too many plastic bags in grocery shopping.

2:32-3:38

Banana leaves are big and flexible, and are widely available in Thailand. Also, they don't cause environmental pollution when they are thrown away.

3:42-4:32

Someone must've taken the initiative for it to happen. They probably hired extra packers to package the goods, which increases cost and decreases productivity in the short term.

4:33-5:41

This is not the traditional management thinking, which encourages gradual gains, and is not designed for long-term results at a short-term cost or positive externalities. This supermarket, however, is doing good to the environment, and creating jobs, which will bring ripple effects.

5:50-7:22

San Francisco-based GoSun developed a solar-powered oven, which is a cylindrical tube with metal pieces to collect energy from the sun. It can be used to cook during day and night, and could be handy for camping or in case power goes off.

7:26-8:36

Although solar energy is not new, connecting it with cooking is still innovative. It opens doors to a wide range of other solar-powered appliances and devices too.

8:46-9:53

In Ghana, researchers are trying to generate energy from burning cocoa pod husks. The husks are a widely available by-product from cocoa production.

9:54-11:03

Early feasibility studies have already shown promises. If successful, the program would provide electricity to more rural areas, add jobs, and build a new industry.

11:08-11:54

Chocolate can give people energy, maybe cocoa pod husks are also high on energy content, which could explain why they can be a biofuel. Only the husks are used, and there's no reduction in the cocoa production.

12:08-13:09

These three ideas sound a little "childish", and go back to the basic elements in nature. Sometimes we are too used to think bigger, more machines, ...

13:10-14:06

The world have been on this type of thinking for many decades, and this mindset elevated our material basis. Now these new ideas are a step back from this industrial thinking.

14:08-14:52

We are sometimes too used to the industrial thinking, and we overlook other things, especially the environment. To solve environmental issues could be as simple as thinking the opposite.

14:58-15:58

The "childish" ideas is kind of thinking outside the box. They are actually very sound arguments that give us good results. Our mindset just went blind on these types of thinking.
