译《小王子》：第二十一章 驯服哲学
It was then that the fox appeared.
"Good morning," said the fox.
"Good morning," the little prince responded politely, although when he turned around he saw nothing.
"I am right here," the voice said, "under the apple tree."
"Who are you?" asked the little prince, and added, "You are very pretty to look at."
"I am a fox," said the fox.
这时，一只狐狸跑了过来。
“早上好！”狐狸向小王子问好。
“早上好！”小王子礼貌性地回复道，他转过身来，四处搜寻一番却什么也没瞧见。
“我在这儿！”声音再次传来，“苹果树下。”
“你是谁？”小王子问完，不禁感叹道，“你看起来可真漂亮呀！”
“我是狐狸。”狐狸回答道。
狐狸
"Come and play with me," proposed the little prince. "I am so unhappy."
"I cannot play with you," the fox said. "I am not tamed."
"Ah! Please excuse me," said the little prince.
But, after some thought, he added:
"What does that mean-- 'tame'?"
“过来和我一块玩吧，”小王子提出请求，“我感觉好难过……”
“我可不能陪你一起玩。”狐狸拒绝道，“我还未被驯服呢！”
“噢！真抱歉！”小王子遗憾道。
经过一番思量，他又问说：
“‘驯服’是什么意思呢？”
"You do not live here," said the fox. "What is it that you are looking for?"
"I am looking for men," said the little prince. "What does that mean-- 'tame'?"
"Men," said the fox. "They have guns, and they hunt. It is very disturbing. They also raise chickens. These are their only interests. Are you looking for chickens?"
"No," said the little prince. "I am looking for friends. What does that mean-- 'tame'?"
“你不是本地人吧。”狐狸说道，“你为什么会出现在这里呢？”
“我想寻找人类。”小王子说，“那个‘驯服’是什么意思呢？”
“人类啊，”狐狸说，“他们手握长枪，喜欢打猎，简直令我头疼不已。他们唯一的好处就是会饲养小鸡。难道你是来寻找小鸡的吗？”
“不是，”小王子说道，“我想结识一些朋友。‘驯服’到底是什么意思呢？”
"It is an act too often neglected," said the fox. It means to establish ties."
"'To establish ties'?"
"Just that," said the fox. "To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world…"
“这是一件被人遗忘的事情。”狐狸回答道，“‘驯服’的意思就是‘建立关系’”。
“‘建立关系’？”
“没错！”狐狸解释道，“在我看来，你不过是成千上万个陌生小孩中的一员，没什么特别之处。我不需要你，你也不需要我。而对你来说，我也只不过是成千上万只狐狸中的一员而已。但是如果你驯服了我，咱们便不分彼此。在这个世界上，你对我而言就是独一无二的存在，同样地，我也会成为你心目中的唯一……”
"I am beginning to understand," said the little prince. "There is a flower… I think that she has tamed me…"
"It is possible," said the fox. "On the Earth one sees all sorts of things."
"Oh, but this is not on the Earth!" said the little prince.
The fox seemed perplexed, and very curious.
"On another planet?"
"Yes."
"Are there hunters on this planet?"
"No."
"Ah, that is interesting! Are there chickens?"
"No."
"Nothing is perfect," sighed the fox.
“我大概明白什么意思了。”小王子说，“那朵花儿……似乎已经将我驯服……”
“也许是吧。”狐狸说道，“在地球上，万事皆有可能。”
“噢，不过这个事情并不是发生在地球上。”小王子解释道。
狐狸一脸疑惑，这事太过匪夷所思。
“在另一个星球上？”
“是的。”
“那个星球上有猎人吗？”
“没有。”
“啊，真有意思。那小鸡呢？”
“也没有。”
“好吧，任何事情都不可能十全十美。”狐狸遗憾地叹道。
But he came back to his idea.
"My life is very monotonous," the fox said. "I hunt chickens; men hunt me. All the chickens are just alike, and all the men are just alike. And, in consequence, I am a little bored. But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life . I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others. Other steps send me hurrying back underneath the ground. Yours will call me, like music, out of my burrow. And then look: you see the grain-fields down yonder? I do not eat bread. Wheat is of no use to me. The wheat fields have nothing to say to me. And that is sad. But you have hair that is the color of gold. Think how wonderful that will be when you have tamed me! The grain, which is also golden, will bring me back the thought of you. And I shall love to listen to the wind in the wheat…"
狐狸又开始提起他的想法。
“我的生活实在枯燥乏味。”狐狸说，“每天我追赶着小鸡，而人类就来捕捉我。所有的小鸡都毫无二致，所有的猎人都如出一辙。因此，我有些不胜其烦。但是，假如你驯服了我，生活就会如同太阳重新焕发光芒一般。我就能识记一种前所未有的脚步声，其他人的脚步声会令我闻风而逃，藏身地洞；而你的脚步声却可以动听如歌，唤我前来。再说，你快瞧：那边的麦田，我不以面包为食，所以小麦对我来说就一无是处，而我对麦田也毫无心思。这可真没劲！但是你有着金黄色的头发，试想一下，你要是驯服了我，该是多美妙的一件事啊！那些小麦，有着同样的金黄色，当我看着麦田就可以想到你，说不定还会爱上风吹麦浪的声音……”
相识
The fox gazed at the little prince, for a long time.
"Please-- tame me!" he said.
"I want to, very much," the little prince replied. "But I have not much time. I have friends to discover, and a great many things to understand."
"One only understands the things that one tames," said the fox. "Men have no more time to understand anything. They buy things all ready made at the shops. But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship, and so men have no friends any more. If you want a friend, tame me…"
狐狸注视着小王子，久久不语。
“请……驯服我吧！”他说。
“我十分乐意……”小王子回答道，“只是我时间不多，我还要去寻找朋友，还想去领略更多的事物……”
“事物唯有驯服之后，才能更好地被感知。”狐狸说，“人类总是没有时间去理解事物，他们在商店里购买一切现成的东西，可是没有任何一家商店会售卖友情，所以人们也就不再拥有朋友。如果你想要多个朋友，那就驯服我吧……”
"What must I do, to tame you?" asked the little prince.
"You must be very patient," replied the fox. "First you will sit down at a little distance from me-- like that-- in the grass. I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing. Words are the source of misunderstandings. But you will sit a little closer to me, every day…"
The next day the little prince came back.
“那驯服你，我需要做什么呢？”小王子问道。
“你必须要有耐心。”狐狸回应道，“首先和我保持一定的距离——差不多像坐在草地上那样就可以。我会躲在一旁偷看你，然后你最好保持沉默，毕竟言语就是误解的根源。而你可以试着坐过来些，就这样每天靠近一点点……”
第二天，小王子再次前来赴约。
"It would have been better to come back at the same hour," said the fox. "If, for example, you come at four o'clock in the afternoon, then at three o'clock I shall begin to be happy. I shall feel happier and happier as the hour advances. At four o'clock, I shall already be worrying and jumping about. I shall show you how happy I am! But if you come at just any time, I shall never know at what hour my heart is to be ready to greet you… One must observe the proper rites…"
“可以的话，请在同一个时间到来。”狐狸说道，“比如说，假设你在每天下午的四点的时候会到来，那我从三点的时候就会开始觉得幸福。越临近相约的时刻，我便感觉越幸福。到了四点钟的时候，我会坐立难安，迫不及待想见你，这样你就会对我的幸福感同身受。可是你如果随时出现，我就无法得知要在什么时候期盼你的到来……人应该遵循适当的仪式……”
"What is a rite?" asked the little prince.
"Those also are actions too often neglected," said the fox. "They are what make one day different from other days, one hour from other hours. There is a rite, for example, among my hunters. Every Thursday they dance with the village girls. So Thursday is a wonderful day for me! I can take a walk as far as the vineyards. But if the hunters danced at just any time, every day would be like every other day, and I should never have any vacation at all."
“什么样的仪式呢？”小王子问道。
“这同样是一件早就被抛之脑后的事情。”狐狸说，“仪式可以让某天不同于其他日子，让某一刻不同于其他时间。比方说，在我遇到的那些猎人之中就存在这样的仪式：每逢星期四，他们就会和村子里的姑娘们载歌载舞。这样一来，星期四就是我的幸运日！那天我会随心所欲地溜达，甚至可以去葡萄园玩耍。换句话说，假如猎人不在同一天跳舞，每一天都大同小异，那样我就没有任何逍遥日子可言。”
So the little prince tamed the fox. And when the hour of his departure drew near--
"Ah," said the fox, "I shall cry."
"It is your own fault," said the little prince. "I never wished you any sort of harm; but you wanted me to tame you…"
"Yes, that is so," said the fox.
"But now you are going to cry!" said the little prince.
"Yes, that is so," said the fox.
"Then it has done you no good at all!"
就这样，小王子驯服了狐狸。时光飞逝，很快就临近小王子的出行日……
“啊！”狐狸说，“我肯定会伤心痛哭。”
“这都怪你！”小王子说，“我不曾想过要给你带来任何的伤害……可你非要让我驯服你……”
“对，都是我的错。”狐狸说道。
“而你现在眼泪都快止不住了！”小王子说。
“嗯，确实如此。”狐狸说。
“这对你一点好处都没有！”
驯服
"It has done me good," said the fox, "because of the color of the wheat fields." And then he added:"Go and look again at the roses. You will understand now that yours is unique in all the world. Then come back to say goodbye to me, and I will make you a present of a secret."
“想到麦田的颜色，我仍有所得……”狐狸接着说道，“再去看一眼那些玫瑰花儿吧。如今你应该懂得你的花儿就是这世界上绝无仅有的一朵玫瑰。等你回来向我告别的时候，我会将一个秘密作为礼物送给你！”
The little prince went away, to look again at the roses.
"You are not at all like my rose," he said. "As yet you are nothing. No one has tamed you, and you have tamed no one. You are like my fox when I first knew him. He was only a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But I have made him my friend, and now he is unique in all the world."
And the roses were very much embarrassed.
小王子动身前往，再次见到那些玫瑰花。
“你们一点都不像我的花儿。”他说，“而且在我看来你们根本不值一提。没人驯服你们，你们也不曾驯服任何人。你们就像我第一次见到的狐狸一样，他也只不过是万千狐狸中的一只。但是，我们已经结为朋友，他便是这世上独一无二的存在。”
玫瑰花儿听完他的话有些无地自容。
"You are beautiful, but you are empty," he went on. "One could not die for you. To be sure, an ordinary passerby would think that my rose looked just like you-- the rose that belongs to me. But in herself alone she is more important than all the hundreds of you other roses: because it is she that I have watered; because it is she that I have put under the glass globe; because it is she that I have sheltered behind the screen; because it is for her that I have killed the caterpillars (except the two or three that we saved to become butterflies); because it is she that I have listened to, when she grumbled, or boasted, or even sometimes when she said nothing. Because she is my rose."
“你们的确很美，却又无丝毫意义。”小王子继续说道，“没人愿意为你们舍弃生命。当然，一个普通的路人也会觉得我的玫瑰花和你们一样毫无特色，但是那朵花儿却只属于我！她独自的芬芳胜于你们这满园的春色，只因一切皆为我所有：我为之提壶浇水；为之掩天蔽日；为之遮风挡雨；为之驱虫避害（除了留下三两只毛毛虫蜕变蝴蝶之外）；我还包容她的埋怨，倾听她的自诩，欣赏她的沉默。一切只因她是我的花儿！”
And he went back to meet the fox.
"Goodbye," he said.
"Goodbye," said the fox. "And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."
"What is essential is invisible to the eye," the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.
之后，小王子再次回到狐狸的身边。
“再会！”他告别道。
“再会！”狐狸说，“我要告诉你，我的秘密，一个简单的秘密：唯有用心聆听，方能认清事实，事物的本质并非肉眼可见。”
“事物的本质并非肉眼可见……”小王子默念着这句话，以便将其牢记心头。
"It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important."
"It is the time I have wasted for my rose--" said the little prince, so that he would be sure to remember.
"Men have forgotten this truth," said the fox. "But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose…"
"I am responsible for my rose," the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.
“只因你为了花儿耗费心神，才使得她成为你的心头之好。”
“只因我为了花儿耗费心神……”小王子重复着狐狸的话，试图记在心里。
“人类已然忘记这些真理。”狐狸说，“但我相信你不会忘却。你将对一切驯服之物负责到底，也要对你的花儿负责……”
“我要对我的花儿负责……”小王子复述着，一字一句铭记心中。
