Application indignation: Brexit

① Today a British charity, the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, will discuss the process through which 3.8m Europeans residing in Britain can apply to stay post-Brexit.

② The scheme, only rolled out nationally in January, gives EU citizens who have lived in the country for five years the right to apply for "settled status".

③ This lets them remain with most of their rights intact.

④ (Those who have clocked less time can apply for "pre-settled" status, graduating to "settled" after five years.)

⑤ The digital-only application has been widely criticised for requiring an app only available on newer models of Android smartphones.

⑥ That is not the only complaint.

⑦ JCWI says the government made the rules for granting settled status more complicated than originally promised.

⑧ They now cover the "non-exercise or misuse of rights" under EU treaties, including the right to work.

⑨ This could put EU citizens who are not employed at risk of being removed.
