Smart or harmful?
Reading (节选)
Step1 Lead-in
Boys and girls, good morning. And I’m very glad to see you and I hope you’re going to have a great time, all right?
Before class, I want to take a picture with you, because I want to remember your lovely faces.Shall we? Now, look at my phone, let’s make a pose, and let’s say “1,2, cheese.” All right! Look! Happy faces, right.
Step2 Pre-reading
I like to capture the beautiful pictures of happy moments with my phone. What would you like to do with your phone? How about you?
...
Me too. I like...
...
Ok, you can check ...
So, we can do a lot of things on the phone. Now,let’s watch this. Do you have some of apps on the phone? And this kind of phone is called a smart phone. Can you guess why it is called the smart phone?
...
Yes, because it’s very smart and useful and you all love to play with it.
OK,now, let’s think about a question. Does it sometimes bring you some problems? Is it sometimes harmful for you? It means bad for you. Yes or no?
Now, everyone, let’s discuss in groups and talk about why the phone is smart and why it is harmful. And you can write down your answers around circles, Got it? Ok, you can turn back and talk. Anything is OK. Think about the two sides.
... (repeat)
...Anything else?
... Right?
...How about the harmful side?
...you can sit down. It’s Ok, if you only get these answers. Well done.
Step3 While -reading
Ok, you’ve got two sides of using the smart phones. And we know that all things have two sides, just like smart phones. IF you use it in a right way ,it is very smart. But if we use it in a wrong way, it can be harmful for us .OK? And today, we’re going to read a passage about using the smart phones and the title of the passage is “Smart of harmful?”
Ok, everyone, it’s time for us to read the passage and find out the two sides of using smart phones in the passage. You can underline some key words. But before that, let’s look at the picture first. This is a picture from the passage. What can you see in the picture? Anybody can tell me?
... Do you think they play with their phones so much? Why?
... This is called an addiction to phones. Addiction means people can’t stop doing sth. All right, just like these people.
Read after me. ...
Is there any problem in this picture? Do they talk with each other?
... Yes, they don’t have face-to-face communication.
So,now everyone, it’s your turn to read the passage and let’s find out the two sides. You can underline some key words about the harmful side and circle some key words about the smart side. Got it? Let’s read and find.
Ok, have you finished? Now let’s check. First of all, tell me which side does the writer write first?
....Tell me anything about the harmful side?
...Do you think it is a bad thing?
...That’s right. Anything else about the harmful side?
...What’s the meaning of this? Where did you get the meaning? In the next sentence.
So, everyone, in the passage, the first harmful side is here.... and the second side is ... here. This is the hard one. But the next sentence explains the meaning of the first sentence. So, everyone, next time, when you don’t know the meaning of a sentence, don’t worry. Because you may get the meaning of the sentence before of after it. Got it?
Ok, let’s move to the smart side.Anybody find anything about the smart side? Have a try.
... Can you give me an example?
... yes, but that’s not the news. Can you give me another example?
... How about this group?
Ok, let’s check. ... Now, we’ve got the two sides of using the smart phone in the passage.Let’s see how the writer organize or list these ideas in the passage.
First of all , tell me which paragraph talks about the harmful side.
... Tell me is there an easy way or a quick way to know that paragraph3 and 4 still talk about the harmful side? Anybody? How about you?
... (Introduce two words: moreover, in addition. Explain them to the studetns.)
Ok, tell me which paragraph is about the smart side?
...Fron which word you can tell that Paragraph5 no longer talks about the harmful side? It changes to be the other side.
...( Explain however to the studetns.)
Yes, however is like a turning point. Before however, one side, after however, the other side.
So, paragraph 4-5 is the body part of the passage, which has two sides.
We need to know that all things have two sides. Just like this coin. There is a saying “Each coin has two sides.”
Then,we still have Paragraph 1, Can you tell me how does the writer begin this passage?
... By asking a question.
Para1 is the beginning. Para6 is the ending.
Ok, everyone, let’s think about another question. In the passage, the writer writes two sides about using the smart phones. But which side does the writer support? Which is the writer’s opinion? Does the writer believe the smart phone is smart or harmful?
... Now let’s read the passage again. There is a sentence in the last paragraph which shows the writer’s opinion. Can you find it out? Which sentence?
What’s the writer’s idea?
... From which word?
... It’s true.... but....( explain this sentence pattern to the studetns.)
Ok, let’s think about a question. You says the phone is very smart, but why it still causes some problems? Can you find the answer in this passage?
... What do we need to do next?
... It’s very important for us to make a change?
If you’re the writer, what are you going to write next?
...
So, paragraph 6 can also be a transition. So, in a transition paragraph, it tells us somthing happens above. It will also tells us what the author is going to write next.
Now, it’s your turn to open the color paper. Let’s read what the writer writes next-the real last two paragraphs. You can underline the answers on the paper.
Ok, everyone. Are you ready? Let’s check it together. How about this group?
... Maybe you can answer like this. ... and how?
Well done. What’s the meaning of “discount”? Does it mean “ pay more” or “ pay less”?
... Do you agree?
Step4 Post-reading
Let’s think about ourselves. What do we do to make a change? For example, how to use the smart phone in a right way?
Let’s make a change of the harmful sides. You can write down like this. ... Got it?
Let’s turn back. In a group of four. Discuss and make a change.
Are you ready? Let us hear your wonderful ideas. Which group wants to have a try?
... Good idea.
...
I love all of your ideas. But because of the time, we can’t hear all of your ideas. You can share your great opinions after class and write a passage about” How to use your smart phone in a right way?”
Step5 Summary
Ok, let’s review, everyone, what we learnt today?
First of all, we know that all things have two sides. Just like the smart phone. If we use it in a right way, it is smart. But if you use it in a wrong way, it can be harmful.
After looking at the two sides, what are you going to do next?
... very great! So, it’s important for us to make a change.Make a change of the harmful sides. Do you agree?
So, everybody. Let’s make a change today and hope for a better future tomorrow.
So much for today’s class. Ok,guys, bye, thank you~
