Lesson 15 Good news 佳音

The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth would see me. I felt very nervous when I went into his office. He did not look up from his desk when I entered. After I had sat down, he said that business was very bad. He told me that the firm could not afford to pay such large salaries. Twenty people had already left. I knew that my turn had come. 'Mr. Harmsworth,' I said in a weak voice. 'Don't interrupt,' he said. Then he smiled and told me I would receive an extra thousand pounds a year!

From Harmsworth's View:

The business dropped dramatically this year. And I had fired twenty employers since the firm were not able to afford such 'great expense'[=> a large sum :170130] of salaries. Mr. Woff was a responsible and skilful worker who devoted his precious ten-year time to the development of 'this'[=> the :170130] firm. So I decided to promote him to senior manager and increase his wage. That was a good news ''[=> so] I wanted to tell him 'by myself'[=> in person :170130]. I asked secretary to call him into my office. He looked nervous until I smiled and told him that he would [get promoted and] get an extra thousand pounds each year.
