Since the environmental pollution and the traffic congestion caused by a huge number of automobiles are becoming more and more serious in both urban and rural areas, some individuals assume that the best solution to these problems is to raise the price of gasoline consumed by vehicles. In my opinion, I totally disapprove of the above standpoint.

Admittedly, with private cars and other motor vehicles increasing exponentially in today’s world, the problems created by them are bound to grow correspondingly. Nevertheless, it is impractical to limit the number of vehicles on the road by the increase of oil price. One of the unavoidable reasons and some feasible solutions are as follows. First and foremost, when the cost of fuel used by cars and other vehicles goes up, the public transport will also be affected. As the cost of fuel used by cars and other vehicles rises, public transport will suffer, which will ultimately affect commuters and those who cannot afford private cars.

Furthermore, now that the use of cars, trains and other mechanical vehicles is a major contributor to air pollution and traffic pressure, it is essential for each individual to consider telecommuting whenever possible, which is one of the major approaches to reduce automobile pollution and alleviate road congestion. In addition, the use of solar and wind power goes a long way towards controlling environmental pollution, so the development of vehicles powered by clean energy should be encouraged. Besides, due to the fact that the most common cause of traffic jams is the overcrowding of existing roads, it is urgent to reduce private cars and expand the existing public transport system.

All in all, it is evident that the rising price of petrol is not the best way to solve growing environmental problems. The adoption of telecommuting, the use of clean energy and the development of more advanced and efficient public transport system are more reasonable solutions to these problems.
