A Banana Slug

We had a great time backpacking in Point Reyes National Seashore and enjoyed a flurishly green world.

One of the highlights in this trip was definitely encountering Banana Slugs. The first time I saw it in the middle of a trail, I remember thinking "who threw away a big pickled jalapeno?" Later, we encountered another one. A fellow hiker pointed out that it was a Banana Slug, boy did I realize it was not some pickled pepper!

Later, we saw a few more on another trail, and I can't help but take a picture of it, in comparison with my hand. It was as long as my hand, so big! However, I can tell that it is very fragile, too. A snail has a shell, what does it have? Nothing. No shelter, no home, thoroughly exposed to the world. If an eagle spots it and attacks it, what can it do? Probably nothing.

Maybe that's why we can't see many of them in the wild. Maybe it thinks it's a failure too sometimes, as a slow creature that can react little to its surroundings?

Even so, I thank the nature for having it as part of the ecosystem diversity, and made it a highlight of my backpacking trip.

Below is the actual photograph :)
