On February 18, 2020, the Utah Senate passed a bill to legalize polygamy.

The bill quickly passed the Republican-controlled Senate with 29 votes in favor and 0 votes against.

Republican Senator Derry Henderson introduced the bill. The bill was passed on Tuesday, local time, and is now before the House of Representatives.

However, if the marriage was threatened or coerced, or if it took place under the pretence of fraud, it is still a third-degree felony.

Let ’s start with the history of Utah. This is the place where there are the most Mormons in the world. Mormon is a religion under the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One of their teachings is to practice polygamy because This is a manifestation of "fraternity," in keeping with God's will. These Mormons lived in Helidale, almost isolated from the world.

About 30,000 people currently live in polygamous communities in Utah.

Earlier in Utah, polygamy was convicted of a criminal offence and sentenced to up to five years in prison. The bill changes existing laws to legalize polygamy.

Henderson said the purpose of the bill is to reduce penalties so that victims of crime from polygamous communities can stand up without fear of being prosecuted.

She also said that it would also make it easier for polygamy who had previously complied with the law to access key services such as medical or mental health care, education and even employment.

The bill has been criticized for not doing enough to protect the victims of underage marriage

In the past, when polygamy was practised, it was because many women had paid the price of blood and life that the status of women gradually rose. Now we are all open-minded. Equality between men and women is the ideological education that everyone has received since childhood. This time, the legalization of polygamy is hard for many people to accept.
