When OPENER meets FINALE

As I am planning to open up a new phase of English teaching, which is yet to be unfolded to a clearer state, I do decide today to share with you an antonym that we may overlook or even hardly pick up in the course of our routine English writing and speaking - "opener" & "finale".

We may easily get the literal meaning of both words: to start or end something, because Opener starts with "open", Finale "final". Technically speaking, you get that right! Say, we may talk to our dummy sports-cursed friend Jack: "The opener of the Olympics could never be more boring this year!" or "Dude, tonight is the night! Nadal and Djokovic are gonna battle in the Wimbledon finale!" He would counter like: "Knock it off! Go out and we play some serious Ping-pong!"

納豆和小德在溫布頓finale(總決賽)開打啦!”

Forget about Jack. Now we bring these two words into our limelight: can they both only be used in the situation of sports? We know native English is full of metaphor, hints that need, usually desperately, to get comprehended by whoever are subject to be a listener. If, for a moment, "opener" indicated the start of any form, then it would only be proper to put it in all kinds of circumstances where similar grand opening is taking place like in the sports arena. While "finale" would only be fitting when we want to convey the last scene of all serial occurrences. Thus, we can't screw the opener of our college life, either because there are so many academic fundamentals that we should attend to, or just because there are so many ladies that we are trying to avoid missing a romantic encounter. After a few back-and-forth, day-and-night, the slap announces something like "What a finale".

So,

因此,

OPENER: (n.) Anything with a beginning, usually kind of grand and ready to kick off a sequence.

FINALE: (n.) Anything with an ending, usually kind of grand and after a serial of efforts.

And welcome to the opener of my English teaching, your new English learning experience.
