(询问这个村子的掌故)
"Anything I need to know about this town?"
“关于这个镇子,有什么我需要知道的吗?”你并不想在村子里惹上什么麻烦。
"Well, we are all good people. Trouble won't find you as long as you stay away from it."
“嗯,我们都是本分良民。只要你不去找麻烦,就不会惹麻烦。”车夫翻着眼想了想。
"Also, don't fuck with the soldiers because, you know, you're stuck here with them for the next two years."
“也别惹那些当兵的,因为你接下来两年还得跟他们在这混呢。”
"Nothing useful."
“没什么有用的。”你心里这么想着,但还是点了点头。
他正要走的时候,你的眼睛瞟到了那间被烧毁的房子,连忙问道:
"What happened to that house? Someone set it on fire?"
“那间房子是怎么回事?是有谁把它给点了吗?”
"Yeah, that house. "
“那间房子啊。”车夫的五官拧在了一起,他难以察觉地点了点头。
"Clot used to live there, that old twat.
“克罗特以前是住在那的,那个老混蛋。
"He got some 'connections' with a Sergeant here, so to speak. Therefore, he'd been the pimp here until someone decided to burn his house."
“这么说吧,他跟要塞的一个队长‘有点联系’,所以一直就在这当鸡头的,后来有人就把他房子给点了。”
"When did that happen?"
“这是什么时候的事?”
车夫为难地挠了挠头,差点不小心把帽子打下来。
"I can't recall, but it's really not long ago. I'd say early December."
“这我可真不记得了,但是确实没多久,大概就是12月初的事儿吧。”
穷乡僻壤死了一个鸡头,你也不知道为什么对这件事情如此上心。但你还是继续追问了下去:
"Did he survive?"
“他活下来了吗?”
车夫又摇摇头。
"No, soldiers came in no time and found him dead."
“没,没多久,当兵的就来了,来了发现这人已经死了。”
"Who did this? Did they find the arsonist?"
“那这件事是谁干的呢?他们找到纵火犯了吗?”
你看着车夫迷惑的表情,明白他并不知道“纵火犯”这个词是什么意思。
"Did they find the one who burnt the house?"
“他们找到烧房子的那个人了吗?”
车夫肥厚的下唇随着头部的摆动而颤抖。
"I think not."
“我记着是没有。”
你若有所思之时,车夫已经向你道别走远了。你回过神,开始打量起这间过火的房子来。这时你才发现这栋房子像是被人整个用力掰弯了一样——并不是哪个毛手笨脚的工匠把它造歪了,也不是因为被火烧而变得东倒西歪,而是每个部分、每块灰砖甚至木板都有略微的弯曲。
你不知道是谁在这个穷乡僻壤搞出了这样一栋房子,但你越看它,越感觉这栋房子有些令人不快的异样。这种感觉仿佛是一个异世界披上了我们世界的皮,装模作样地站在了你跟前。
走近房子
强迫自己往镇子上走
