Hello, I am Peter O'Hanrahan ,
I'd like to talk to you for a few minutes about a workshop
Instincts and subtypes.
That's part of our Enneagram Professional Training Program .
This training program was started twenty seven years ago by Helen Palmer and Dr. Dave Daniels
并且
and
It's now happening in many countries around the world .
This is a two-day workshop
That's part of our corporate curriculum
the study of instincts and subtypes .
And as you may have heard
there are nine Enneagram types
and each of the nine types has these three very important variations called subtypes .
so it was actually twenty seven subtypes
So it's a lot of material .
It's not really a beginning workshop although people are welcome,
if they know something about Enneagram ,
if they know something about the Enneagram type
Here we really are looking at the variations
based on what we call the predominant instinct .
Now there are three major biological drives
Three major instincts
which are part of all of us as human beings .
These instincts have been developing for really millions of years
They go way way back in our history as a species .
and of course they are different now in a modern society .
They began all as survival instincts
really important for our survival as individuals and also as a species .
Now we hope that they are about more than survival
and we can actually work with them to develop them
in a much more expanded way
Self preservation instinct is about
having enough of the material supplies to support life .
It's about food, warmth and shelter
It is about home
In the modern day it's about having enough money to get by .
It's also about family
and family starts relationships that we share the basic needs with
In the modern world it's more than this
In the modern world it's also about
constructing the buildings on the highways
it's the farmers growing the food and it's transportation and
It's banking and insurance
It's about the material infrastructure of our civilizations
所以
So uh
And self preservation instinct is really about our right to be alive
to have enough to sustain our life
our physical life
also physical nurture
that's important too .
And then beyond this it's about
our participation in a world of resources and
building a society if you will .
and certainly the physical components in that society .
The one-to-one instinct ,
which was originally called the sexual instinct .
More terms are actually true but
It is certainly about sexuality .
But it's more than this it's also about our one-to-one style in relationship.
So our one-to-one connection
It's really about our right to be
loved to be seen in love as an individual .
Certainly it's about our survival as a species, you know, it's about procreation and
people having babies .
you know many many generations of children .
It's about the celebration of our sexuality in many ways that can show up for us
both with an intimate partner but also in our creativity .
in our drive for personal excellence
in what we do and
sometimes often in our spiritual practice
Here goes like this certain kind of intensity of the life force .
那
So uh
The third instinct is the social instinct .
And this is about our participation in groups .
This was also about survival because you know
when we were early in the history of our species
It seems that one of the
reasons we were able to survive and make it through as a species
was our ability to gather together in groups and that there were powering groups .
Today
we have a very complicated mordern world
而且
and
our social instinct guides our participation
in this world where we are part of groups
It's really about organized groups. It's about social structures
It is not so much about how many friends we have
It's really about our membership, our belonging in social groups, our rule in the community .
How we are seen by others .
It's about our right to belong .
So on one hand it's like the other two instincts. It's about our survival
There are very few people who live in the cave, in the mountains.
Most of us are part of organised society
and part of our communities .
But it's also, of course, building a very complicated and complex modern world
We use all three of these instincts every day
We get up in our homes .
We take care of ourselves ,
Our self-preservation instinct is a line about our daily rhythms of
eating and sleeping
working and exercising
Its about our self-care and our self-nurture for ourselves
and oftentimes our family members .
All of us
We may have an intimate relationship, a sexual relationship .
But even if we don't ,
we usually have someone we connect with on a one-to-one basis
a special friend or colleague
where we looked directly at this person and
had the experience of being seen and recognized in that relationship .
every day we participate in groups or
at least most days we leave our homes
and we go to offices or workplaces where we're there with other people .
So we have these three instincts
We use them every day .
But the Enneagram suggests that one of these instincts becomes more important
in the big scope of our lives
Sometimes this is obvious
sometimes not so obvious
But Enneagram suggests that one of these instincts,
if we can see the big picture
that one of these instincts has become more important
It gets more of our attention
We put more of our time and energy in one of these areas of life .
And so this gives us what's called subtype, the instinctual subtype .
所以
And so
even though we may be the same Enneagram type as the person next to us .
the subtype differences can really show up .
They show up in terms of where we go,
you know what's really important
to us in terms of our activity in our major projects .
It also shows up in our relationship style
because subtypes have so many different relationship styles .
In this workshop
we get people together in subtype groups
If you don't know your subtype, you have an opportunity to discover it in the workshop .
and if you are not sure, that's ok
because really it's a process of exploration .
Nobody needs to be under percent sure
But we get people together in subtype groups and explore, so when self-preservation people haven't come
aside from your Enneagram type
what you have in common is subtype group
and the social subtypes and the one-to-one subtypes
and this is really fun and interesting
when people realize, you know, we‘re understanding one another
We have certain kind of language, certain kind style of relationship
It is different from those other two groups .
So here is a system of three
actually even without the Enneagram
we would have a system of three based on the predominant instinct
When we put the instincts together with the nine Enneagram types,
we have a wonderful and complex view of the human community
So the nine personality types
which are really nine in characters structures ,
But we have twenty seven instinctual subtypes
This allows us to really see and value
what we could say as the twenty seven paths in life
the paths that people take
based on what's most important to us
What's important of course is to understand
how we may get caught in patterns
according to our type and subtype
how those patterns or habits can show up in our lives and
we can tend to check out or fall asleep on our priorities
所以
And so
it's easy to just be taken over someone by the patterns .
and so we want to make sure that we know what are our patterns
and how do these patterns reflect our true selves?
Is this really authentic?
Is this really reflect my priority or
is it something that i've just kind of fallen into a habit with
And of course our priorities can change
what we had being really most important in one period of our life
may be somewhat different in another period .
And so with this view of not the Enneagram types but the twenty seven subtypes
we can really identify what is our path
and how does our path serve us
How does it really reflect our authentic selves and
when does our path perhaps take a gun
you know, caught in habit or we've kind of fallen asleep in some way .
I love this aspect in Enneagram
because I think it really helps us to see people's lives
The kind of the heroic journeys that we all make
based on what's really important to us ,
our family our work
our spiritual practice
to really see those and talk about those
and value those ,
and also be able to keep bringing ourselves back to what is our true priority here
What's really serving my essential self
as opposed to just getting caught in the habits of my personality type
There is another part of this. It's really important
We go into this more lengthy during the workshop of course but
just a quick overview .
As you know the Enneagram talks about three centers of intelligence, three centers of perception ,
or head, heart and our body
And what the understanding of subtype theory does for us
is it shows us how the passion of our type
we can say the emotional habit of our type
It's the contraction of our heart center
the way that our type structure, each of the nine type structures has particular contraction or emotional habit
which is really important for our personal development and our relationships .
Now what the system sends to us is that this emotional habit of passion
is expressed through the activity of our subtype .
And so it's as though we're trying to discharge, get rid of or
in some way reconcile
the really difficult and uncomfortable emotional habit
We try to do something with it and
so it goes into our subtype activity .
And the problem with it is that it can actually distort
the really life-affirming aspect of our instincts in our subtype .
So when the versions of fear, anger or grief or avoiding grief
show up in our subtype activity ,
it can start to take us off our course .
So for example as a type Eight
my emotional habit is related to anger, which's one of the aspects of anger
And when that shows up in my subtype activity
for example socially
the term for socially is social causes, friendship and social causes
and those are really important to me
in fact, bring a lot of value to my life .
But when my angry energy starts coming out in those areas .
it creates big problems
And i'm not always aware of that ,
I say, I am not being angry.
I'm just doing what's important to me.
I'm passionate about this stuff .
I don't necessarily realize that
I'm also somehow expressing my anger in this activity
and it's pushing other people away
Of cause I do get feedback about that from people
But I am like what do you mean? i'm not being angry
I'm just being intense about my project in this case
It's my social cause .
So this is important because the emotional habit can
make problems for us in our subtype activity
which is mixed in, its closely mixed in and we don't know we see it
The other issue here is that
in order to work on our type structure .
we really have to come directly to our emotional habit
We've gotta get with emotional habit of our type
and that's hard to do
And when we're discharging or getting rid of our emotional habit through our subtype activity
we're not aware of our feeling state
we've gotta really come to terms with, you know, what is the contraction in my heart's center
And how does that affect my expression of my subtype and
what I do in my daily life and my style in relationship .
But we have to be able to get present to them
to come inside ourselves using the practice of awareness and breath to really, you know, explore.
and be present to our emotional habit so that we can work directly with it
The emotional habit is so crucial for any kind of self development
because it provides the motivation
It is the fuel for our whole type structure .
It's kind of like running the show .
So even though we learn about the Enneagram at first through our minds .
We've gotta bring our learning down to our heart center and our body centre
And in this way the Enneagram is a holistic system ,
meaning that we , we can work with all three centers at the same time
work on developing in our minds, our hearts to our bodies
In this two-day workshop
we will explore all of this and we will spent a lot of time working with the panels
doing panel interviewers, everybody sits on the panel of their type .
and we get to open up our understanding of the types by seeing the subtype variations
and also by focusing on what the innerwork is for each of the twenty seven subtypes.
