1 Can表示能力，可能性，许可，惊讶的语气等These difficulties we can and must conquer.

2 Could可以表示can的过去式、用法与can类似，语气上更婉转；

She could sing very well when she was a girl.

Could you show me how to do it?

How could you be so stupid?你怎么可以这么傻？

She felt miserable she could have cried.

I could have died laughing.

3 May用来提出问题、允许、可能、祝愿、和well连用表示很可能、may as well 表示不妨

A fool may give a wise man counsel.

4 Might表示可以、可能等

He suggested one or two books which they might buy.

If I knew them better, I might invite them to dinner.

5 Must表示必须、一定

You must keep it a secret.

注意must的反义用needn’t. Must I come at 4? No, you needn’t.

6 Ought表示应该、建议等

He ought to be isolated.

You ought to be prepared for something unpleasant.

It ought to be ready by now.

Jack ought to have arrived by now.
