It has been said that everyone lives by selling something.

ɪt hæz bɪn sɛd ðæt ˈɛvriˌwʌn lɪvz baɪ ˈsɛlɪŋ ˈsʌmθɪŋ.

In the light of this statement, teachers live by selling knowledge,

ɪn ðə laɪt ʌv ðɪs ˈsteɪtmənt, ˈtiʧərzlɪvbaɪ ˈsɛlɪŋˈnɑləʤ,

philosophers by selling wisdom and priests by selling spiritual comfort.

fəˈlɑsəfərz baɪ ˈsɛlɪŋ ˈwɪzdəm ænd prists baɪ ˈsɛlɪŋ ˈspɪrɪʧəwəl ˈkʌmfərt.

Though it may be possible to measure the value of material goods in terms of money,

ðoʊ ɪt meɪ bi ˈpɑsəbəl tu ˈmɛʒər ðə ˈvælju ʌv məˈtɪriəl gʊdz ɪn tɜrmz ʌv ˈmʌni,

it is extremely difficult to estimate the true value of the services which people perform for us.

ɪt ɪz ɛkˈstrimli ˈdɪfəkəlt tu ˈɛstəmət ðə tru ˈvælju ʌv ðə ˈsɜrvəsəz wɪʧ ˈpipəl pərˈfɔrm fɔr ʌs.

There are times when we would willingly give everything we possess to save our lives,

ðɛr ɑr taɪmz wɛn wi wʊd ˈwɪlɪŋli gɪv ˈɛvriˌθɪŋ wi pəˈzɛs tu seɪvˈaʊərlɪvz,

yet we might grudge paying a surgeon a high fee for offering us precisely this service.

jɛt wi maɪt grʌʤ ˈpeɪɪŋ ə ˈsɜrʤən ə haɪ fi fɔr ˈɔfərɪŋ ʌs prɪˈsaɪsli ðɪs ˈsɜrvəs.

The conditions of society are such that skills have to be paid for in the same way that goods are paid for at a shop.

ðə kənˈdɪʃənz ʌv səˈsaɪəti ɑr sʌʧ ðæt skɪlz hæv tu bi peɪd fɔr ɪn ðə seɪm weɪ ðæt gʊdz ɑr peɪd fɔr æt ə ʃɑp.

Everyone has something to sell.

 ˈɛvriˌwʌn hæz ˈsʌmθɪŋ tu sɛl.

Tramps seem to be the only exception to this general rule.

træmpz sim tu bi ði ˈoʊnli ɪkˈsɛpʃən tu ðɪs ˈʤɛnərəl rul.

Beggars almost sell themselves as human beings to arouse the pity of passers-by.

ˈbɛgərz ˈɔlˌmoʊst sɛl ðɛmˈsɛlvz æz ˈhjumən ˈbiɪŋz tu əˈraʊz ðə ˈpɪti ʌv ˈpæsərz-baɪ.

But real tramps are not beggars.

bʌt riəl træmpz ɑr nɑt ˈbɛgərz.

They have nothing to sell and require nothing from others.

ðeɪ hæv ˈnʌθɪŋ tu sɛl ænd ˌriˈkwaɪər ˈnʌθɪŋ frʌm ˈʌðərz.

In seeking independence, they do not sacrifice their human dignity.

ɪn ˈsikɪŋ ˌɪndɪˈpɛndəns, ðeɪ du nɑt ˈsækrəˌfaɪs ðɛr ˈhjumən ˈdɪgnəti

任务配置:L0+L4

知识笔记:

grudge (怨恨)

strong feeling of anger and dislike for a person who you feel has treated you badlyespecially one that lasts for a long time:

Amanda still has/holds a grudge against me for refusing to lend her that money.

surgeon  (外科医生) In modern medicine, a surgeon is a physician(内科医生)who performs surgery
