Main Branch 1: General Information. Nervous system functions as the co-ordinator of the body’s response to a particular stimulus via collecting information, processing and integrating the information and initiating appropriate responses to the stimulus. The human nervous system consists of Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). The pathway of nervous control is: Stimulus detected by receptors; information sent via sensory nerve to CNS; CNS receives the information and processes the information; response sent via motor nerves to effectors.

Main Branch 2: Neuron. A neuron is a specialised cell for carrying information in the form of electrical impulses. A typical neuron has mainly two parts: cell body and nerve fibres. Nerve fibres are categorised into 2 parts, namely dendrons and axons.

Main Branch 3: Specific Function. The specific function of each part of a neuron is as follows: dendron: to conduct impulses to cell body; axon: transmit impulses away from cell body; synapse(junction between 2 neurons): transmit nerve impulses from one neuron to another; Schwann cell comprises Myelin sheath(provides nourishment for cell) and Node of Ranvier(accelerate transmission of impulses).

Main Branch 4: Function of Different Neurons. Neurons are divided into 3 types, which are sensory neurons, intermediate neurons and motor neurons. Sensory neurons have single, long dendron and short axon, they conduct impulses from receptors to CNS; intermediate neurons transmit impulses among sensory neurons, brain and motor neurons. Motor neurons have single, long axon and several short dendrons projecting from cell body. It conducts impulses from CNS to effectors.

Main Branch 5: Spinal Cord. Spinal cord comprises central canal and spinal nerve. Spinal nerves can be divided into two parts: dorsal root(with a dorsal root ganglion) and ventral root. Dorsal root only contains sensory neurons and ventral root only contains motor neurons. There are two regions in the spinal cord, namely the white matter and the grey matter. The white matter consists of mainly nerve fibres and the grey matter consists of mainly cell bodies.

Main Branch 6: Reflex Action. Reflex action is the spontaneous/ immediate/ rapid response to a specific stimulus without conscious control. Reflex action can be categorised into conditioned reflex action and unconditioned action. Conditioned reflex action is acquired from past experience and unconditioned reflex action is acquired from instinct. Reflex arc(shortest pathway by which impulses travel from receptor to effector in reflex action) comprises the receptor, neurons, spinal cord and effector.
