People think that old buildings should be knocked down and give way to the new buildings. Do you agree or disagree? How important are old buildings to us?

In the process of urbanization, there are usually a suite of thorny issues needing to be addressed. Among them, whether we should demolish old buildings and give way to new ones. People have mixed feelings towards this problem. In my belief, we should remove those old buildings that are risky and have little value while preserve the ones that have historical, cultural and economic interests.

On the one hand, some old buildings have become very dangerous because they were built many years ago and have past their lifespan. If we still keep them in our neighborhood, they would pose a lot of hidden threats to the city residents. Besides, with the development of the cities, the former residential apartment blocks have failed to meet the need of increasing number of city dwellers, therefore, we need to remove the old shanty towns and make room for new and more modern city infrastructure.

On the other hand, some historical buildings are maintained in good condition and possess high historical, cultural and economic value which should be well protected. For instance, the Chen Clan Temple in the city of Guangzhou in south China boasts in its long history of clan culture and exquisite carvings and decorations in modern China. Each year, thousands of visitors come to Guangzhou to sightsee this historical building cluster and help the municipal government gain an attractive sum of revenue. For another example, the People’s Liberation Monument of the City of Chongqing marks the victory of Anti-Japanese War by the Chinese people 78 years old. This historical site has also become the symbol of Chongqing as a war time capital of Nationalist China in the past. Hence, old buildings like this one owns high educational and cultural values and comprising the collective memory of a city dwellers or even a whole nation which undoubtedly needing to be preserved.

In summary, in order to best balance the benefits and drawbacks of historical buildings, we should spare no efforts to preserve those with educational, cultural and economic values and do away with the ones which have exceed their quality self life and those old ones which hinder the development of the modern city.

在用词用句方面,唐老师使用的“a host of questions”、 “pull down”、“replace with”、“make a detour”、“deserve”和“We all need a memory of our past. Many old buildings do have historical and cultural values which tells us who we were.”

On the one hand, some old buildings have become very dangerous because they were built many years ago and have past their lifespan. If we still keep them in our neighborhood, they would collapse at anytime and pose a lot of hidden threats to the city residents. Besides, with the development of the cities, the former residential apartment blocks have failed to meet the need of increasing number of city dwellers, therefore, we need to pull down the old shanty towns and make room for new and more modern city infrastructure.

On the other hand, some historical buildings are maintained in good condition and possess high historical, cultural and economic value which should be well protected. For instance, the Chen Clan Ancestral Temple built to prepare the journors of 72 Chen clans for the imperial examination in the late 20th century in the Qing Dynasty in contemporary China in the city of Guangzhou in south China boasts in its long history of clan culture and exquisite wood carvings , pottery artifacts, unique tranditional architectural style and decorations in modern China. Each year, thousands of visitors home and abroad come to Guangzhou to sightsee this historical building complex and help the municipal government garner an attractive sum of revenue. For another example, the People’s Liberation Monument of the City of Chongqing marks the victory of Anti-Japanese War by the Chinese people 78 years old. This historical site has also become the symbol of Chongqing as a war time capital of Nationalist China in the past.

In summary, in order to best balance the benefits and drawbacks of historical buildings, we should spare no efforts to preserve those with educational, cultural and economic values reminding us of our past and do away with the ones which have exceed their quality self life and those old ones which hinder the development of the modern city.
