“The medium of film lends itself to ‘intercuts,’ and the script breaks away from one scene and goes to another...”(Melzer and Coxwell-Teague 19)

This quotation comes from the section “Literacy Medium”. This section of the article invites the readers to read excerpts from J.R.R.Tolkien’s work Lord of the Rings in two different mediums, and the passage represents “intercuts” as one of the biggest differences between these two mediums-books and film. It explains what “intercuts” is, how the “intercuts” works and also invites readers to think about why “intercuts” should be there in the medium of film.As readers, we are also led to think about what it will bring us, what does the author of the script try to make us understand with the way he/she shaped his/her texts.

The most important word in this passage is “scene.” It is really the most important part of the film which serves as the key to a successful film. And it’s also what the “intercuts” creates to make it different from the book and shows why the excerpts from J.R.R.Tolkien’s work Lord of the Rings in two different mediums which explain the meaning of “Literacy Medium”, and are very good evidence to prove that there are huge differences between different mediums.

This specific passage also adds credibility to the central idea of the whole text, which explained in the text above, the definition of the literacy is “multiple”. It helps us to understand the big picture of how the definition of the literacy changed and became much more “multiple”, not only it’s genre, persona and so on, but also its medium. It also gives a vivid example of how mediums serve.as “the tool” to deliver the message.
