persist vi.

释义：to continue to exist

“persist”是个不及物动词，主要有两个意思，一个是“继续存在”，一个是“顽强坚持”，今天我们学习的是表示“继续存在”时的用法。persist 表示“继续存在”时，主语往往是有负面含义的事物。我们可以用它来替换“exist”，在一些语境中用 persist 更准确、简洁。   

例① 近期流感严重，许多人开始发烧、咳嗽。如果我们的亲人朋友一直发烧咳嗽的厉害，我们就可以对他说：

If the fever and cough persist, see a doctor.   

这句话还经常出现在药品包装袋上。如果服用某种药物一段时间还不见效，应该及时就医。

例② 我们想说有些传统思想依然存在，比如要求女性早点结婚生子，服从丈夫和婆婆。

Old traditions persist: women are still expected to marry young, bear children, and obey husbands and mothers-in-law.（这个句子中的 persist 也可以用我们之前学过的 remain 来替换，区别是 remain 本身没有负面含义。）

例③《经济学人》中也经常出现 persist，我们一起来看几个例子：   

a) The scars of racial segregation persist. 

b) Arguments persist over how to keep Israel safe.

c) Emerging evidence suggests that the consequences of mistreatment in childhood may persist down the generations, affecting a victim’s children or grand-children, even if they have experienced no abuse themselves.

在这几个句子中，persist 都可以被 remain 替换。

persist.for 持续… 时间 If symptoms persist for more than a few days, see a doctor. 如果症状持续多日，就去看医生。

persist through/throughout 持续整个…期间:The depression persisted through much of the 1930s.

2. 翻译: 尽管官方予以否认，但谣言仍未平息。

Though denied by official, the rumor still persists. （参考翻译：Despite official denials, the rumors still persist.）
