Warm up/ Introduction:
Show animal pictures and sounds to kids to learn animal names, and have kids observe the cover page, ask them “Can you guess what will happen to these animals in the story?” Let’s find out together if you are right! Here begins the story!
Story telling
Stop at every page, have kids observe the tail, turn the page to show the animal. Look at the animal and ask again “do you want to be my friend, horse?” Have the kids answer yes or no. Then continue the story.
Story review
After the first reading, kids mostly know the animals. Re-read the story, focus on the tail and ask kids to recall which animal it is.
Activities
Each kid is given a picture of one of the animals from the story.
1. I play as the mouse, I ask every little “animal” “Do you want to be my friend, hippo?” Kids will answer yes or no.
2. Kids stand in line, the first kid turns back and asks the next kid “ do you want to be my friend, alligator?” The kid answers and turns back to ask the next one.
3. Act every animal‘s sound and the way they walk.
4. For elder children, we can create answers of each animal.
Ending/Extensions
Discuss with kids why the previous animals don’t want to be friend with the mouse. The horse is busy eating grass? The giraffe is too tall? The snake is the enemy? Have kids express their understandings and thoughts.
