A. Texts & Notes

1. You get very good flowers at Bramley's.

(At the hotel…)
Young man: Excuse me.
Receptionist: Yes, sit?
Young man: Where can I get some flowers, please?
Receptionist: There's a flower shop in King Street, sit. Turn rihgt outside the hotel. The flowers there are usually very fresh.
Young man: Thanks.
Old man: You want some flowers, I believe?
Young man: That's right.
Old man: Bramley's is the place to go.
Young man: Bramley's?
Woman: It's a wonderful place. They sell everything, not just flowers. It's a department store - a very good one.
Old man: I bought some flowers at Bramley's forty years ago, for my new wife.
Woman: That's right.
Young man: There flowers are for my new wife.
Old man: Wonderful! They'll find something special for you at Bramley's. And they're not expensive.
Young man: Good. Where is Bramley's?
Woman: It's not far. We can take you there, if you like. We're going for a walk.
Old man: Good idea. And flowers are a good idea, too. Madge like flowers, don't you, my dear?
Woman: Yes, of course.
Old man: You come with us.
Young man: All right.
Receptionist: Thank you, madam.
Woman: We're taking the young man to Bramley's.
Receptionist: Bramley's?
Woman: For the flowers. He wants to buy some flowers.
Receptionist: Yes, but …
Old man: You get very good flowers at Bramley's.
Receptionist: Not any more, afraid.
Woman: What?
Old man: They don't sell flowers now.
Receptionist: They don't sell anything. Bramley's isn't there now. They built some office there, about ten years ago.
Woman: Oh, dear. Everything changes, doesn't it? At least the hotel is here.
Old man: And what's more important, we're still here!
Woman: Thank heavens!

Where can I get …?get
We are spending our time looking at some local castles and old houses. Where can I get a book about castles?(我们的时间要用来参观一些当地的城堡和老房子的。

  Where can I get a roll of film?(照相胶卷) At a chemist's.(药房)
  Where can I get a newspaper?(报纸) At a newsagent's.(报刊经售)
  Where can I get some medicine?(药品)At a chemist's.(药房)
  Where can I get some bread?(面包)At a baker's.(面包铺)
  Where can I get some meat?(肉)At a butcher's.(卖肉的)
4. We can tack you there, if you like. 这里 if you like(如果你喜欢的话)常用来表示建议。

出去散步,是 to go for a walk,for 表示目的。

2. Can you recommend a good show?

(At the hotel. Mr Jones wants the receptionist to have dinner and go the theatre with him.)
Mr Jones: Well can you help me? Where can I get some theatre tickets, please?
Receptionist: At Robinson's Ticket Agency. It's across the road. It's a very good one.
Mr Jones: Thanks. Oh, and can you recommend a good show? Is there a show you want to see, for example.
Receptionist: Excuse me. Ask that gentleman. Mr Jones. I'm sure he can recommend something.
Husband: Recommend…?
Mr Jones: A show. And a restaurant. Something that she will like.
Husband: Oh, I see.Well, you can get a good nead at Luigi's. That's a good Italian restaurand. And there's a very good play at the National Theatre.
Mr Jones: A play?
Husband: She looks like a serious girl to me.
Mr Jones: Oh. Yes, perhaps you're right. We can eat at Luigi's Restaurant, then see a play at the National Theatre. How's that?
Receptionist: Very good.
Mr Jones: Well, when are you free? Tonight?
Receptionist: Me?
Mr Jones: Yes. I'd like you to have dinner with me and come to the theatre.
Receptionist: I see. Er — can my husband come too?
Mr Jones: Your husband?
Receptionist: Yes.

要别人推荐什么,说:Can you recommend (something)? Could you recommend … ?
或 There's … Do you like …?
 例:In the Tourist Information Centre
Clerk:Well, what are your interests?
Man:Oh, they're very general. We're interested in the theatre. Can you recommend a good show?
Clerk:Well, what are you like comedies?
Woman:Yes, we do.
Clerk:Well, there's a very good play at the National Theatre. I can recommend it?
Man:*Why not? Thank you. Will you do the booking for us?

一场电影可说 a film show,一个广播节目叫 a radio show,一个电视节目叫 a televition show。
这就是为什么在这一篇课文中 Mr Jones 想看 show,但那人推荐 a good play,并说“She looks like a serious girl to me.”

注10.Something that she will like. You recommend something that she will like. that she will like 是定语从句,修饰 something.
在形容 evrything、nothing、something、anything 等不定代词时,多用 that,that 也经常可以省略,如:
Is there anything (that) I can do for you?

3. Where can I get my shoes repaired?

(An extravagant woman comes to the receptionist and ask for help.)
Extravagant woman:Excuse me.
Receptionist: Yes, madam?
Extravagant woman: I've got a problem with one fo my shoes. Where can I get it repaired, please?
Receptionist: At Mason's. That's the shoe shop in the High Street. Turn right outside the hotel. But it's quite a long way, I'm afraid.

I want to get my car repaired.(我要把车修一下。)
I want to repair my car.(我要修一下车。)
这两句都是要修车,但第一句是意味着要别人帮他修,是拿出去叫别人修,第二句则意味着自己修。又如;
I'd like to have my hair done.(我要做头发。)
I want to have my clothes cleaned.
I want to clean my clothes.(我要洗我的衣服。)
