Phantom of the opera is well-known as the longest-running show in Broadway history and a symbol of musical theatre,becoming the latest show to call victim to the drop-off in audiences.

It always stood apart from the vicissitudes of the outside world as a permanent part of the Broadway landscape and a period piece and a tourist magnet. For the reason why it falls is that the audience has not fully rebounded and it didn't sell well enough to defray its high weekly running costs.

Next year, it will commemorate its 35 anniversary in Jan. and play its final performance in Feb.
