He was born in the impoverished area of Odense(欧登塞), Denmark.
His father earned a living as a shoemaker and his mother was a washerwoman.

Luckily, he met a director at the Royal Theater who regarded him as a talent and offered financial support for his education in Copenhagen.
When he passed the entrance examination to the university, he wrote his first story for celebration.
One of his famous stories portrays a poor little girl whose little naked feet became blue with cold wandering on the street to sell matches.
He enjoyed worldwide fame for writing many classic fairy tales, including Emperor's New Clothes, Little Ugly Duckling, The Snow Queen, and so forth.
