Summary practice of “past racist
The article “Opinion: Past racist coverage appalls National Geographic editor” tells us that National Geographic used to publishe magazines with racial discrimination, which was under the background of age whe blacks In US were ignored.
If Haile Selassie were born and raised in the United States, he would not be as successful as he lived in the Kings of Ethiopia. one of significant reasons was the barriers existed in the United state, at least from a political point of view, which separate “white people” away from “colored people”.
Magazine’s Hisotry “hurts”
The editor herself found it’s hard to deny or avoid the crucial facts that the magazine itself as a source of discrimination from the past. However, when they decided to write on the topic of “race”, they have to face their hisotry honestly and accurately.
Writer Elizabeth Kolbert believes that there is an interrealtionship between biological difference and social relationships, because the idea of race can divide people from their appearance and isolate them from other communities.
If the mission of National Geographic is to introduce a new thing/ new place/ and a new idea to audience neutrally, why would editors allow an exception on racial issues?
Blacks in US were ignored
a professor, who experts on the hisotry of photography and the history of Africa, helped editors to understand the history of the magazine better. People tagged “colored people” as either Laborers or natives in the past. Unfortunately, the Magazine has little help to break this sterotype. Indeed, the magazine helped to emphasis on what audience believed, instead of the whole picture of the story.
Reporting Contrasted
One story when the magazine expressed and emphasis on different point of view, the effort would be dramtically different.
