“Direwolves loose in the realm, after so many years,” muttered Hullen, the master of horse. “I like it not.”
loose做动词大致有两种意思:一是释放，set free;二是发射，loose a shot, arrow, or missile。有一个搭配， If a person or an animal is on the loose, they are free because they have escaped from a person or place. 结合前面Theon Greyjoy说长城以南已经两百多年没人看见冰原狼了，后面Benjen Stark 说在长城以北常常能听见冰原狼的叫声，因此，这里可以这样理解:
历经这么多年，冰原狼终于在长城以北现身了。
最后一个not则是一种古老的用法。
He gave a yank and held it up for all to see. A foot of shattered antler, tines snapped off, all wet with blood.
除了几个生词，倒是没有什么难的搭配和句式。但是这句话描述的画面感很强啊，试问如果是我写:
他猛地一拉，举起来让大家看。是一只残碎的鹿角，角尖已经不在了，上面染满了鲜血。
肯定写不了这么好的英文。
看权游，有一种《三国》的代入感。文明发展是个过程。学近代史，好像总生出一种中华传统封建与西方文明昌盛不可逾越的感觉，把中国古代的男女之别、君臣之见当笑话看，可是你看，奈德问琼恩，你自己不想要一只狼崽吗？琼恩说，父亲，我不是史塔克家族的一员啊。
“You want no pup for yourself, Jon?” he asked softly.
“The direwolf graces the banners of House Stark,” Jon pointed out. “I am no Stark, Father.”
配上年少的Snow一脸的冷峻，这话还真让人有些心疼。
