Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, my name is Harry. Before I begin my speech, let me ask you a question. What do you think is the most dangerous disease in the world? It’s heart attack, cancer, or AIDS? Recently, I have heard an interesting theory, indicating that none of those answers are correct. The right answer goes to procrastination. The word seems a little bit unfamiliar to all of us, but I believe most of us have been infected with this horrible disease. I still remember when I a little kid, we used to have lots of homework in holidays. The sad thing was that I often forgot to do them until the last the day of the holiday. That’s when I got the disease of procrastination, or in Chinese we say……
Being a procrastinator, you are more likely to put off or delay an action to a later time. The reasons for you doing that vary from people to people. First of all, you just don’t know how or where to begin. Too often we have been given a very complicated task that we don’t know where to start? One day, you finally persuaded yourself to take the first move, but the feeling was not good. Somehow you thought that there might be a better way of doing this, but sadly you didn’t know. Then you decided to put it away, and did it again when you had more clear ideas. But that day never came.
Another reason for procrastination is bad time management. Now we are living an information-explosive century. No matter we like it or not, we have to deal with many tasks at the same time. Take me for example. Because of work, I had a lot of business trips every week. During the workdays, I had to answer about 30 calls and replied about 20 emails every day. Meanwhile, as the VPE of this club, I am responsible to encourage other people to take roles and prepare the agenda for the meeting. Occasionally I also had my CC speech. In most cases, because no one pushed me in terms of my CC speech, I often chose to deal with my work issue at first. But there was never an end of the work, and I didn’t begin to prepare my speech until last night. You see, I didn’t plan my time based on the importance of every task, I just handle things follow the time urgency.
Apart from those two reasons, people procrastinate because of perfectionism. They are afraid of failure, and they worry their perfect images might be affected if they can’t do it well. They have to acquire instant satisfaction to push them forward. When I talked about these three reasons with my friends, one of them told me that, hey Harry, please don’t make this so complicated, you procrastinate simply because you are lazy, man.
If I don’t want to be the so-called lazy man, what should I do? I asked a friend of mine for help. He was a very self-disciplined man. To overcome procrastination, the only suggestion he gave is to make detailed plans. We might have made a lot of plans all the time, but still it could not prevent us from procrastination. In most cases, that’s because the plans were very vague. We’d like use timeline like ASAP, in the shortest time, when I finished my work. Instead, try to make effective and clear plans. If you have a big plan, try to split it to several small plans and tackle them one by one.
For example, some day you decided to learn Photoshop, because it’s so important to your work. But have you realized the fact that learning PS was never an encouraging thing? It’s so vogue. Every time when you decided to begin, you thought maybe you should check out your email for a moment. Then you find the screen of your computer was very dirty, or suddenly your cell phone was rung, and your boss assigned you an urgent thing to deal with. As a result, you never got the chance to study PS.
To make your plan more effective, you need to read books, conduct researches, and ask your friends for help in terms of learning Photoshop. You should know the necessary steps and how much time does it take for each step. Then the plan would become:
Step One: Apply for an on-line course;
Step Two: Insist on watching the course for two month, one hour per day;
Step Three: Check out how well you have mastered the skill every week;
Step Four: Try to do some PS every month and ask other people for advice.
You see, if you have made effective plans, those plans would force you to finish a certain target every day. That’s what I did when I decided to challenge a full-marathon the next year. I signed up for a 187 day on-line training plan, and every day I will received a kindly remind of how long should I run on that certain day. The habit lasts until today.
Ladies and gentlemen, getting rid of procrastination is in fact another saying of controlling your life. It’s such an exciting and wonderful thing. Your self-esteem will be full-filled, your hatreds and regrets will disappear, and you finally become the master of yourself. Do you have anything you want to do, please don’t start in the future, start here, start from today, and start now. Thank you!
