(a substance formed by boiling bones, skin, ligaments, etc.) is from
Latin gelare (to freeze). Ultimately from the Indo-European root gel-
(cold; to freeze), which also gave us jelly, chill, glacier, cold,
and congeal. Earliest documented use: 1935.
