- 背景知识 -
1.pass the nuts
这是80世纪小孩子们常玩的一个游戏，在一个四角垂直的弹球桌上，放着四个动物，四个动物对应着四个不同的塑料按钮。一按按钮，相对应的动物会开始移动，或者翻转尾巴等。参与游戏的人需要协调动物的动作来让塑料坚果从游戏板的底部移动到顶部。因此游戏名称叫“通过坚果”。
- 熟词生义 -
1.「utter」：这里是动词，发出声音。
原句：And when Wendy finished, he uttered a hollow groan.
例句：I couldn’t utter a word. （我一句话也说不出。）
2.「still」：副词，意思是还有。
原句：Still it is better to be careful.
例句：She made still another excuse.
- 句子解析 -
1. So great indeed was the children's faith in a mother's love that they felt they could afford to let her worry for a little longer.
这个句子是一个长倒装句，句子的主干就是「so…that」结构，表示“如此…以至于…”，基本结构是：so + adj/adv置于句首时，so…后面的句子要用部分倒装，that后面的句子则不用倒装。
还原这个句子就是这样滴：The children’s faith in a mother’s love was so great indeed that…他们对母亲的爱这样深信不疑，以致于他们觉得……
【they could afford to(经得住) let her worry for a little longer】这部分都是they felt(觉得)的内容 ,let her worry for a little longer 字面意思是“让她（妈妈）多担心一会儿”，其实就是他们觉得自己还可以在外面多流连些时候。
2. No one knows as quickly as a child when he should give in.
这句可以拆成两部分来理解，【No one knows as quickly as a child】（没有人会比孩子更快知道），【when he should give in】（什么时候该让步，屈服）。
结合上下文来看，Peter讲到自己的亲身经历，以前他出去玩就久了，妈妈并没有给自己留窗，反而有其他的小孩儿替代了自己睡在自己的床上。所以紧接着作者说，没有人会比孩子更快知道他应当屈服的时候，也就是说Peter不得不面对并接受被妈妈忘记的现实。
3. Scared at the thought of losing Wendy, the lost boys had advanced upon her and threatened her.
在这个句子里， 「scared at」是修饰the lost boys的，用于说明孩子的心理状态，意为：这群遗失的孩子害怕失去Wendy。
再举一个栗子感受一下，Afraid of being caught, the thief hid himself in the corner.（小偷害怕自己被抓到，所以躲在角落里。）
注意这句话里的长得很像的. 「losting」和lost, losing 是动词lose的ing形式，表示“失去”，而lost是形容词，意为“迷路的”。另外：lose的过去式和过去分词也是lost，别弄混了哦~
「Advance on/upon…」表示：（常指为攻击而）前进，这里指孩子们竟跑到她面前威胁起她来。拓展：advance还有一个很常见的搭配in advance (提前)，例如：Book tickets 21 days in advance. 请提前21天订票。
4. By this time they were sad, not merely because they were about to lose her, but also because they felt that she was going off to something nice which they had not been invited to.
这句话有个很有用的表达【not merely because …but also because…】就是“不只是因为…也是因为…”的意思，可以用来陈述多个原因，记得get哟~
例句：He was fired not merely because he was lazy, but also because he failed to meet my requirement. 他被开除不仅是因为懒惰，还因为无法达到我的要求。
这句话的意思就是：这时候（by this time），孩子们心情沮丧，不单单是因为他们就要失去Wendy，也是因为他们觉得Wendy将要去（go off to:动身前往）某个好地方而他们却没有被邀请去。
5. They took it for granted that if they went he would go also, but really they scarcely cared. Children are always ready to desert their loved ones when adventure calls.
「take sth for granted」固定搭配，觉得…理所当然，I take it for granted that a mother should love her child.
「desert」这个词做名词时是“荒漠”的意思，荒芜人烟的沙漠想想都很孤寂，所以，做动词的时候就是“抛弃，遗弃”的意思。真是一个自带凄凉bgm的词。
dessert这个词长得和desert仅一词之隔，但却是“甜点”这样sweet的词。
dessert & desert
这句话的意思就是：孩子们觉得他们都去，Peter也就一定会去，他们把这想得理所当然，其实Peter到底去不去，他们其实并不怎么在乎（scarcely表否定，几乎不）。孩子们总是这样，当冒险在前方召唤时，他们宁愿抛下（desert）最亲的人。

《肖申克的救赎》
简介：
20世纪40年代末，小有成就的青年银行家安迪因涉嫌杀害妻子及她的情人而锒铛入狱。在这座名为肖申克的监狱内，希望似乎虚无缥缈，终身监禁的惩罚无疑注定了安迪接下来灰暗绝望的人生。未过多久，安迪尝试接近囚犯中颇有声望的瑞德，请求对方帮自己搞来小锤子。以此为契机，二人逐渐熟稔，安迪也仿佛在鱼龙混杂、罪恶横生、黑白混淆的牢狱中找到属于自己的求生之道。他利用自身的专业知识，帮助监狱管理层逃税、洗黑钱，同时凭借与瑞德的交往在犯人中间也渐渐受到礼遇。表面看来，他已如瑞德那样对那堵高墙从憎恨转变为处之泰然，但是对自由的渴望仍促使他朝着心中的希望和目标前进。而关于其罪行的真相，似乎更使这一切朝前推进了一步……
