About English Class Reading ——老师

Good afternoon ,everyone. So honored to be here to share my ideas about English class reading with you.

I don't think it's a good topic today, since lots of teachers and experts have touched this topic so many times, and it seems that there is no extra need for me to give further explanation and information about this part. After all, reading is just reading, the principles of which never change.

What changes are the students we are faced with. With fast paces of the modern society, they're becoming so different that some of us always say that they are becoming worse and worse from grade to grade.

Actually,as with everyone, our students also have their own advantages as well as disadvantages. They have the ability to show their love, are willing to voice their opinions and more creative and imaginative. In the meantime, it's a little hard for them to concentrate on what they do. Sometimes they lack patience and can't keep themselves absorbed in reading.

When teaching, we'd better try to make use of their advantages and leave some tasks for themselves to complete, which will make not only teachers but students winners.

So today, my lecture will be focused on how to teach reading effectively and how to stimulate and keep the students' interest in reading a relatively long passage and help them finish the related tasks ,to which I will attach more emphasis.

Almost everyone is reading every day.Usually we just open a book, then read on.The problem is that many people can't stick to it and find reading hard. They are not attentive enough and  simply sit down and try to get a rough idea or may turn to another page before they get anything.

About English Class Reading ——老师手记(5)

Many students are among them, who find passages long and hard with so many new words and are unwilling to read in English. But they are obliged to train their reading skills to pass the NMET to get further education. So we have developed many kinds of tasks to help them.

Fortunately, the NMET paper is becoming more and more scientific with time on, the second part of which is mostly focused on reading and writing——from extensive reading to intensive reading, and then grammar and writing.

This gives us a clear way to organize our classroom teaching. From my point of view, we should follow the NMET paper guide and center our teaching on reading and writing because  we have already done much about listening after class every day.Besides, most of us use English to organize our class every day as a supplement to listening training.

As a matter of fact, when we read a passage as a whole, then from paragraphs to sentences ,it benefits our writing skills a lot, and can even improve the students scores in English tests.Because all skills are related as a whole, and shouldn't be parted separately.

So our teaching order should be as follows.

(1)The whole passage.During this part, a few minutes should be applied to instructing students to pay much attention to the stylistic feature , the personal pronouns , the structure and the tenses.

For example, when it comes to a biography, the students should scan it first to get the following ideas.

"What to include when developing a biography?" "What tenses and personal pronoun is the writer using?" and "In what order is the passage arranged?"

(2)Paragraphs.When dealing with a certain paragraph, tell students to pay much attention to the transitional vocabulary, which usually indicates the organization.Sometimes they are asked to get the topic, maybe a sentence ,maybe a word.

(3)Sentences.When facing a sentence, I prefer them to notice the sentence structure before its meaning. If they form the habit, they will day by day be able to think in English and make a sentence in an English way rather than a pile of English words in Chinese order.

As everybody knows, only by thinking in advance and following the above way, can we  get a reasonable article.

And if we teach a reading passage like this, students usually can develop a scientific and effective way to deal with Error correction. So called three birds in one shot.

Next, part of the passage will be adapted to Close Test, Ratinal Close or Error Correction accordingly to review and consolidate the detailed language use.Sometimes a few long and difficult sentences may be referred to to help students to get rid of barriers to understand the whole passage.

They will usually rewrite the text as their assignment or maybe write a similar passage.

All the above procedures are connected with one another and targetedly improve the students skills in NMET paper.Besides, each step only takes a short time. The students therefore  easily become interested and concentrated.

I hope my ideas of teaching reading will be helpful to you,all my fellow teachers.

Thanks for your time.
