Robotics Competition

Just yesterday on 7/07/19, I had a robotics competition. The VEX IQ Challenge. We had tons of fun and achieved a great result. I understand that this competition is a live competition that runs throughout the entire globe and is strong in China and America, so if I make it that far, I’ll hope to compete with those other countries. Aside from that, today I want to cover two things, the spirit of competition and attitude. I’ll be using my robotics competition as an example for both points.

Firstly, the spirit of competition. What I mean by this is the way you participate to try and win. In other words good sportsmanship. Why do people need to display good sportsmanship to win competitions? People need to display good sportsmanship because it shows  maturity and respect, and ensures that winning a competition was only because of their own ability.

An example of this during my robotics day was the determination and support my team showed when participating. During our matches we would give our good lucks to the opposition and shake hands after each match. Our team consisted of only two people as currently it’s school holidays and many students have gone overseas for holiday or to visit family. We adopted a equal mindset where it didn’t matter if we won or not but if we relied on only our best ability and equal play, the outcome would show how much work we put in. In the end we did come first place.

Concluding this point, sportsmanship and a good heart is key to becoming successful not only in school or national competition, but in life and other situations as well. If you lose, put in more work, if you win be modest and keep pushing harder to keep the positions and foster the development even further. This shows why sportsmanship is so important.

My second point is about attitude. Mainly asking and answering in my understanding, one question my mum and I were discussing about on the way back from the robotics competition. Does your attitude decide your ability or your ability decide your attitude?

I believe that your attitude decides your ability because no matter how talented you are, someone who believes in themselves and has a stronger will to win will always achieve a more satisfying result.

Going back to the robotics competition for an example, me and Daniel (other partner) were not over confident that we were going to win (though the other robots were quite bad and inferior to our beastly, complex design), but we both believed that if we tried our best and had a good attitude and showed good sportsmanship, results would be more acceptable and satisfying for us and comforting for the rest of the team. Giving more examples, if your team heard that you lost the competition with the best robot in the world, they would be disappointed. But, if they heard that even with a small, crappy robot you have it your best and still didn’t win, they know that it’s not the team’s mentality or attitude that needs improving, its that small, crappy robot they were using!

Those were some examples for two very important lessons I pulled out from the robotics competition. I hope you can learn something as well. Here is the photos of my school ACG (AGC) at the competition.

这是我校ACG(AGC)在比赛中的照片。
