Summary report on the reading of That's Not English

Book Title: That's Not English

Author: Erin Moore

Erin Moore, the author of "That's Not English," is an American who was an editor for a leading American publisher, specializing in bringing British books to the United States, but even so, she encountered many obstacles when she married her British husband and actually settled in England.

The book is about the different attitudes of British and American people facing the same scene through Erin's own personal experiences and research in the United States and America. The story of the cultural differences between the two countries was wonderful and made my reading experience very enjoyable.

The author uses specific words in the book to reveal to us the differences in culture between the UK and the US. For example, the first word "quite" is used by the British as "quite", which they seem to agree with, but in fact they find it normal and even vaguely negative. Americans use this word to express their sincere approval, and they prefer to use exaggerated emotions to express their emotions in a positive way.

British politeness is also known as "negative politeness," and when the British say the word "sorry," the British often do not really feel sorry, they are not expressing their true feelings.

The differences between the two peoples have to do with their history, and the inherent class that England has developed over the years (over 4,000 years of history). It has the restraint of an old gentleman, hiding class behavior and humor to hide its true meaning.

On the other hand, America is more like a young man eager to perform. It is an emerging, liberty-promoting nation only 200 years old. Compared to England, American culture is more flamboyant and pompous, with a clear cultural quest for struggle.

Next, I would like to talk about the differences in three aspects of life that interest me: food, clothing, and housing.

About food, the word "Moreish" let us find out that the British eat more chocolate than the Americans, I can always see the actors in the American drama are more unrestrained in the family to eat a variety of snacks, everyone's perception seems to be that Americans eat more sweets, but in the data survey found that more attention to healthy diet British people instead eat more, the British prefer snaffle, eat quickly, often eat at rest time, consumption is also far higher than the Americans 2 times.

The British have a variety of different social norms about when and how much to eat, which also makes Americans very surprised. In China, people are generally less overweight than in Europe and the United States, so they are more relaxed in their sweet tooth and do not over-control it, and I am quite fond of sweets that can bring more pleasant feelings.

About clothing, through the introduction of the word "Mufti", the British prefer to wear the system compared to the Americans, the British feel that wearing uniforms can improve concentration while class differences will not be highlighted, but in the daily clothing style is more daring, from this aspect, can also feel the repression for a long time, will be in another extremes to explode.

In contrast, less than a quarter of Americans adopt the uniform system, preferring to be more spontaneous and to choose more seasonable clothing in their daily attire. In contrast to China, Chinese people start to wear school uniforms when they study, and when they enter the workplace, only specific job requirements require them to wear uniforms, so people have an approved attitude towards the system, but they will not want to specifically go with such a dress code on a daily basis.

About housing, in "Fortnight", a word about the introduction of holidays, the background of housing in Britain and the United States is also introduced, the British people extremely love vacation, like the long history of ancient buildings, because of this habit, the British houses are built smaller and smaller, now the average size of a one-bedroom apartment is about the same as a carriage in London.

U.S. houses are much larger, the new house is almost two hundred and thirty square feet, live relatively comfortable, however, facing the mortgage pressure is also very large, which also led to the Americans to work hard, do not dare to take a vacation.

Many of our young people in China are now pursuing bigger houses and bigger careers, which is very much the same as the situation in the fast-growing United States, where people's pursuit of life is different at every stage. My attitude towards houses is more like that of the British, so that people can enjoy life better and travel the world at the same time, which can make life have more possibilities.

Regarding the culture of the two countries, it is not only the literal difference of words, but also the deeper difference brought by culture, and facing the impact of culture is the biggest challenge for us who are going abroad. For each culture, we can keep an open and active learning attitude, and I believe that everyone can find the interesting aspects of cultural differences and bring more surprises.
