外刊读写 | 清明默哀致敬、美国疫情告急

“清明节“到底用英语怎么说？
新闻中常常可以看到的表达是“Tomb Sweeping Day" (扫墓节），这个翻译虽然能够让不同文化国家的人理解节日的内涵，但并没有收入权威字典。
Merriam-Webster's Dictionary 收录的是” Ch'ing Ming", 这是传统的威式拼音[1]，字典给的解释是“a spring festival in China when graves are put in order and special offerings are made to the dead" （中国的一个春天的节日，人们会在这个节日清理坟墓，给逝者献上特别的祭品）。

BBC新闻今日的报道使用了"Qingming Festival", 并解释说” The Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb Sweeping Festival, is usually a time when people visit the graves of their friends and families, sprucing up （清理；使变整洁） the area and making offers （祭品）to their spirits."

BBC的新闻标题是：”China mourns COVID-19 victims with three-minutes silence" (中国举国默哀三分钟，悼念因新冠病毒而丧生的人们）
从这段我们可以学习一些表达：

注意一个词，observe本身就有“默哀”的意思，表示：to maintain (silence or a period of silence), as out of respect for someone has died. (出于对逝者的敬意而保持沉默）
那么，“下半旗致哀” 应该怎么说呢？路透社的报道是“flying the national flag at half mast (旗杆）" ，默哀三分钟同样用的是“observe a three-minutes silence", 通过阅读学英语的一大优势就是，同样的表达见多了，自然就很容易记住了。
美国疫情告急
今早华尔街日报对美国疫情的报道是” U.S. sees coronavirus peak in some cities next week as global toll climbs" （随着全球死亡总人数的攀升，美国一些城市下星期将会达到新冠病毒爆发的顶峰）。纽约州作为疫情最为严重的地区（the hardest-hit state) 达到了单日最高死亡人数（highest daily rise in deaths)。
