中式英语之鉴 重复之示例练习 1-5

1. We should exercise centralized control over the management of foreign exchange and foreign debts and centralize such power in the hands of central authorities.

这两个 centralize 的分句意思一样，可以只保留一下。保留哪一个呢？

第一个只提到了集中管理，但未说由谁，所以就保留第二个。

作者的建议:

We should place the power to manage foreign exchange and foreign debts in the hands of the central authorities.

2. In areas that are suitable for grain growing, a good job must be done in grain production and efforts be made to raise per-unit yield, increase variety, and improve quality.

这个要表达的意思很清楚，在适合谷物生长的区域，就努力做，（为了）实现三个目标。

想起那句，“我会尽最大努力的”， I will try my best....

try 就是 make efforts to do a good job， 至于怎样才是 a good job 其实是很模糊的，不如就不提的好。

作者的建议：

In areas that are suitable for grain growing, we must try to raise per-unit yield, increase variety, and improve quality

3. Naturally, the Chinese side resolutely opposed the propositions and did not accept them.

能感觉出对应的中文其实很符合我们的习惯的，坚决反对...不会接受...，前后承接，这段英文个人感觉也ok。

不过作者认为这两段意思完全一样，建议改成 因为...，所以...。

Since the Chinese side firmly opposed the propositions, naturally it refused to accept them

4. After the decision made at the August 7th Meeting to wage armed resistance against the butchery policy of the Kuomintang reactionaries, the fundamental question of how to achieve the victory in armed struggle and what road the revolution should take lay before the Party.

如何取得胜利，革命道路要如何走，因为这是在讨论一个实际的例子，所以后者“革命道路要如何走”其实就是指“如何取得胜利”。

作者的建议：

After the decision made at the August 7th Meeting to resist the murdurous policies of the Kuomintang reactionaries with armed struggle, the fundamental question before the Party was how to achieve victory in that struggle.

5. Party organizations must set up a centralized leadership in each guerrilla area and remedy the lack of centralized leadership where the working group, the county Party committee, and the gurrilla forces are operating separately.

这里的重复比较明显，第二个 centralized leadership， 我可以第一反应是把它换成 it， 即 lack of it，不过看了作者的建议，他用了 coordination, 就高明多了，centralized leadership 说的是一个结果，实际是协调问题.

In each gurrilla area the Party organization must set up a centralized leadership to remedy the lack of coordination between the working group, the county Party committee, and the guerrilla units.
