①The next man to approach me was selling expensive pens and watches.②I examined one of the pens closely.③It certainly looked genuine.④At the base of the gold cap, the words 'made in the U.S.A' had been nearly inscribed.⑤The man said that the pen was worth £50, but as a special favour, he would let me haveit for £30.⑥I shook my head and held up five fingers indicating that I was willing to pay £5.⑦Gesticulatingwildly, the man acted as if he found my offer outrageous, but he eventually reducedthe price to£10.⑧Shrugging my shoulders, I began to walk away when, a moment later, he ran after me and thrustthe pen into my hands.⑨Though he kept throwing up his arms in despair, he readily accepted the£5 I gave him.⑩I felt especially pleased with my wonderful bargain -- until I got back to the ship.⑪No matter how hard I tried, it was impossible to fill this beautiful pen with ink and to this day it has never written a single word!

the words 'made in the U.S.A':短语'made in the U.S.A'是words的同位语

inscribe/ɪn'skraɪb/:If you inscribe words on an object, you write or carve the words on the object. Some galleries commemorate donors by inscribing their names on the walls.

be worth…:值得……,如:The watch is worth £100.

favour /'feɪvə/:something that you do for someone in order to help them or be kind to them恩惠;善意的行为,如:I owed him a favour so I couldn’t say no.

let sb. do sth.让某人做某事,如:Don’t let the baby cry.

gesticulate /dʒe'stɪkjʊleɪt/:If you gesticulate, you make movements with your arms or hands, often while you are describing something that is difficult to express in words. A man with a paper hat upon his head was gesticulating wildly.

outrageous /aʊt'reɪdʒəs/:If you describe something as outrageous, you are emphasizing that it is unacceptable or very shocking. By diplomatic standards, this was outrageous behaviour.

find sb/sth +adj. I find the book interesting.

reduce…to…:把……减少到……:Please reduce the degree to 37.

thrust /θrʌst/:throw up his arms in despair:绝望地举起双手

That patient abandoned the attempt in despair.

thrust /θrʌst/:if something is thrust upon you, you are forced to accept it even if you do not want it把… 搭配:thrust sth upon/on sb,如:She never enjoyed the fame that was thrust upon her.

No matter how hard I tried, it was impossible to fill this beautiful pen with ink and to this day it has never written a single word! ①no matter how:不管怎样,是从属连词,引导让步状语从句,类似的从属连词还有no matter who, what, which, where, when等,如:No matter how old you are, you can chase your dream. ③fill (sth) with sth,如:Her eyes filled with tears .

Summary writing:(this paragraph)

The next man who approached him was selling watches and pens, and when the writer looked at one, it looked genuine. The man said it was worth £50 but the writer could have it for £30. The writer offered him £5 and waited. Eventually, as the writer was walking away, the man agreeded and took £5. The writer was very pleased—until he was back on board. The pen was impossible to fill. It has never written a word since.
