Fingerprints have long been used by law enforcement as a means of identifying suspected perpetrators. Each one of ourfingers has a differentsetof grooved ridges. These ridgescollectoil, sweat, and grease which are transferred to items when we touch them. Crime scene investigation often includes finding fingerprints and attempting to “match” them to knownindividuals. Many lay people believe a fingerprint “match” is just that: amatch. However, as will be seen, fingerprint matching is not a science and in many situations, is very unreliable. Thismodulewill help defenders understand thebasicsabout fingerprints so we canunderstandwhether those thatsupposedlyinculpate ourclientsare reliable.
There are three types of fingerprints:Latent prints, Patent prints, and Plastic prints. Latent Prints areinvolved incrime scene investigation and there are manythingsan investigator needs to know about them. They are made of three ingredients: sweat, fat and protein from residue on anindividual’s fingers. Patent Prints are ones that can be seen by the naked eye. They arecausedby the transfer of visible residue onto a surface (blood or powder for example).Plastic Printsare prints that maygetstuckin a substance(such as paint, grease or glue) and remain solid.
