Ying's head was swimming. Her efforts had made her sweat profusely and she was dehydrated.
Her vision was blurred and she felt like she had a hedgehog in her throat.
But she was elated because there was some hope that she could save LanLan.
Saving her was a long way from them both getting out alive, of course, but together they had stood up to their fate and confronted it.
Once you had done that, just once, you were a grown-up.
Like Monk Tang on his journey to the West to fetch the Buddhist scriptures, you would only get your true reward when you had overcome eighty-one obstacles.
Ying's fingers were bleeding and she had cut her fingernail before setting off, so there was nothing to protect the pads of her fingers from the sand grains.
But she didn't care if she rubbed her fingers to the bone.
She dug and dug-and her fingers soon started to bleed. Lan Lan told her to scoop instead and, though it wasslower work, her channel was gradually getting deeper.
Ying felt that she was saving herself just as much as LanLan.
She was in dire straits too, but now she felt as if she was extricating herself.

莹儿头晕目眩了。因为使力，她出了好多汗。这一来，身体更缺水了视力也模糊了，嗓子里像卧着刺猬。
但她很高兴，毕竟，她看到了救出兰兰的希望。虽说这所谓的救出，仍离活着走出沙漠有很远的距离，但她们也算闯过了一个命运的铁门槛。
一生里，谁都会遇上铁门槛的，你闯过一次，就成熟一次。就像唐僧取经那样，你只有经过九九八十一难，才可能得到正果。
莹儿的指尖先出血了，进沙窝前，才剪了指甲，沙就直接在指肚儿上磨。开始刨时，她是不顾命的，哪怕将十个指头全磨没了，也没啥。
她就刨呀刨呀，没刨多久，指头就出血了。兰兰就叫她改成了捧，慢是慢了些，槽子却越来越深了。
莹儿觉得她不是在救兰兰，而是在救自己。她自己不是也陷入了跟沙坑差不多的绝境吗？不也正在进行自救吗？许多时候，救别人也就是救自己。(摘自《白虎关302-303页）
