独立寒秋，

In cold late autumn

湘江北去，

The river water is clear

百舸争流。

And hundreds of ships compete for advancement.

鹰击长空，

Eagles cleaving the sky

鱼翔浅底，

Fishes swimming in the clear water,

万类霜天竞自由。

All creatures are competing for freedom in the frosty weather.

怅寥廓，

A mood of melancholy descends on me,

问苍茫大地，

I’d like to ask who should dominate

谁主沉浮？

The ups and downs of the vast earth?

携来百侣曾游，

I used to come here with lots of my companions

忆往昔峥嵘岁月稠。

In those eventful months and years.

恰同学少年，

We were vigorous students

风华正茂；

Just in the bloom of youth.

书生意气，

With scholar spirit

挥斥方遒。

We were full of energy and enthusiasm.

指点江山，

Commenting on the state affairs

激扬文字，

And writing passionate words,

粪土当年万户侯。

We saw the warlords and rulers merely as muck.

曾记否，

Do you still remember

到中流击水，

We swam in the rapids

浪遏飞舟？

Making waves that could stay swift boats?
