雅思写作真题(47)----经济增长(2019年9月7日真题)

When it comes to economic growth, some hold that it is the sole solution to the issue of poverty and hunger in today’s world. Nevertheless, others assume that economic growth is resulting in the environmental damage and destruction, so it should be ceased. From my perspective, I strongly incline to the standpoint that economic growth needs to eradicate poverty and hunger as well as protect the environment.

Admittedly, the generally acknowledged fact is that economic growth may bring about numerous benefits, such as improved standards of living, increased public services, employment rates, average incomes and so forth. Nowadays, economic growth driven by modern technology has led to increases in profits for companies and salaries for individuals as well, not to mention better healthcare and rises in life expectancy. In a sense, global poverty and hunger are reduced by economic growth.

Although economic growth is usually considered beneficial, it is not the only way to eradicate poverty and hunger in the world. To begin with, it is undeniable that there are potential costs associated with economic development and the biggest one is the damage to the environment. Furthermore, excessive and blind pursuit of economic growth is a major driving force behind the loss of ecosystems including the damage of rainforests, coral reefs, wetlands and Arctic ice. In addition, other environmental problems like desertification, garbage in piles, air and water pollution are apparently caused by uncontrolled economic growth.

In conclusion, despite the above environmental threats, economic growth cannot be halted. Actually, the absence of economic growth is far more toxic to a society than its presence; therefore, economic development is very important to eventually eliminate poverty and hunger on Earth. However, economic growth must take environmental protection into account, so it must be environmentally sustainable.
