Metamorphoses /,metə'mɔ:fəsi:z/(变形记)

Metamorphoses, a Latin epic which retells Greek and Roman myths, was written by the Roman poet Ovid around 8 A. D. As one of the most influential works of western culture, the poem has inspired such authors as Dante(但丁) Alighieri, Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare(莎士比亚).

《变形记》是一首重述希腊和罗马神话故事的拉丁语叙事诗,由罗马诗人奥维德创作于公元8年左右。作为西方文化中最具影响力的作品之一,这首长诗启发了但丁、乔叟和莎士比亚等作家。

Metamorphoses is the plural(复数) form of the word metamorphosis, which means transformation(变形) or shape-shifting. There are many stories in Greek mythology about Zeus who transformed himself repeatedly in order to approach mortal(凡人) or immortal(神) maidens.

metamorphoses是metamorphosis一词的复数形式,意思是“变形”。在希腊神话中,有很多故事讲述的都是宙斯变成各种东西以便接近某个女神或凡人女子。

In modern English, the prefix(前缀) meta- appears in such words as metabolism(新陈代谢) or metathesis(音位变换), denoting(表示) a change of position or condition

在当代英语中,meta-这个前缀可以构成诸如metabolism(新陈代谢)或metathesis(音位变换)这样的词汇,其中meta-的意思就是改变位置或条件

and some academic words like metacognition(元认知), meta-mathematics(元数学), meta-analysis(元分析), and so on, meaning higher or across. The word morphology(形态学) now refers to the study of the forms of things.

而在一些学术词汇中,如metacognition(元认知)、meta-mathematics(元数学)、meta-analysis(元分析)里,meta-是更高或交叉的意思,而morphology一词就是“形态学”。
