Take The PMI Talent Triangle as reference, here is my point of view: The BIM Talent Triangle.

The BIM Talent Triangle

Explanation

The BIM Talent Triangle focuses on six key skill sets and one center.

1. Basic skills

1.1 Language

The language means natural language, such as Chinese, English. The ability to acquire other knowledge as well as the ability to learn, understand and communicate is closely related to this skill.

1.2 Mathematics

All about mathematics, such as calculation, mathematical thinking, logic, abstract, and analysis.

1.3 Practice

Practice means practical skill, such as explore, experiment, innovate, and invent.

The ability to solve problem is closely related to Mathematics and Practice skills.

These three basic skills are not only the compulsory ability of primary school students, but also the foundation of human civilization.

The integrated development of basic skills has promoted the progress of science. This is how the extended skills come.

2. Extended skills

2.1 Professional Specialty

Professional specialty is like language in a broad sense.

Because BIM is about building, so it means building language, which refers to building knowledge, such as architecture, structure, and MEP.

The language barrier is apples and oranges. Stakeholders must understand each other before they can communicate, so professional background knowledge is essential.

2.2 Information Technology

Information technology is like mathematics in a broad sense.

It refers to digital skills, such as algorithms, programming, and databases. It directly determines the technical means to solve specific problems.

2.3 Management

Management is like practice in a broad sense.

It refers to management skills, such as strategy, leadership, finance and business. You may have insight into management from Peter F. Drucker‘s bookThe Practice of Management.

The management skill is comprehensive, it involves not only the technology, but also the humanity. Management entails farsighted thinking about the future state of things and taking appropriate risks to capitalize on opportunities.

3. Center

The central red dot in the picture has a purpose. In my opinion, dot represents a person, red represents life and fire.

As the fire of life burns, different skills will merge with each other, and the dot will gradually become a shape when a person acquires more knowledge and masters more skills. But Life is limited, the fire of life will eventually extinguish. There are always some lack of skills, no one is perfect.

Examples

Normally, the central red dot will become an irregular shape as the fire of life burns. To make it simple, I use regular shapes to show examples.

Here are six names, represent six types of roles.

Examples

ABC represent traditional roles.

Adam is an architect. He did his work well with CAD. He knows BIM a little but he has not used it yet.

Ben is a developer. He works for a BIM software company. He knows much about information technology but little about building.

Clare is a manager. She is very professional about business and management but knows little about BIM.

DEF represent merged roles.

Dina is an engineer. She knows much about building and information technology, she also knows management a little. She uses BIM at work, and has developed her own software solutions.

Eve is a product manager works for a software company. She knows much about building and management, she also knows information technology a little. Now her team is developing a new BIM software.

Felix is a business analyst. He works for a real estate company. He knows much about information technology and management, he also knows building a little. Now he is thinking how to make the best use of BIM technology to develop buildings.

Ideally, there is a name represent a perfect role.

Thank you for reading.
