Missing Faraway Relatives in the Moonlight

海上生明月，

Over the sea the moon shines bright

天涯共此时。

Far apart, we have the same moonlit night

情人怨遥夜，

The affectionate would rather have the night shortened

竟夕起相思。

For I’d have a sleepless night, yearning for you

灭烛怜光满，

With the candle out, I can better enjoy the moonlight indoors

披衣觉露滋。

Putting on my coat,  I feel the chill of dew outdoors

不堪盈手赠，

The moonlight can’t be picked up and sent to you as a gift

还寝梦佳期。

Better go back to bed, hoping to reunite in the dream

【白话译文】

大海上升起了圆圆的月亮，

此时你我人在天涯共相望。

多情的人不希望月夜漫长，

一夜无眠把亲人怀想。

熄灭蜡烛怜爱这满屋月光，

披衣出门感觉到夜露寒凉。

不能掬起皎洁的月光赠送给你，

只希望能和你相见在梦乡。

【注释】

1)怀远: 怀念远方的亲人。

2)情人: 多情的人，指作者自己或亲人。

3)遥夜：长夜。怨遥夜：因离别而失眠，以至抱怨夜太长。

4)竟夕：终宵，整个夜晚。

5)滋：湿润。

6)怜光满：爱惜满屋的月光。
