Customs Officers are quite tolerant these days, but they can still stop you when you are going through the Green Channel and have nothing to declare. Even really honest people are often made to feel guilty. The hardened professional smuggler, on the other hand, is never troubled by such feelings, even if he has five hundred gold watches hidden in his suitcase. When I returned from abroad recently, a particularly officious young Customs Officer clearly regarded me as a smuggler.
‘Have you anything to declare?' he asked, looking me in the eye.
‘No,' I answered confidently.
‘Would you mind unlocking this suitcase please?'
‘Not at all,' I answered.
The Officer went through the case with great care. All the thing I had packed so carefully were soon in a dreadful mess. I felt sure I would never be able to close the case again. Suddenly, I saw the Officer's face light up. He had spotted a tiny bottle at the bottom of my case and he pounced on it with delight.
‘Perfume,eh?' he asked sarcastically. 'You should have declared that. Perfume is not exempt from import duty.'
‘But it isn't perfume,' I said. ‘It's hair gel.' Then I added with a smile, ‘It's a strange mixture I make myself.'
As I expected, he did not believe me.
‘Try it!' I said encouragingly.
The officer unscrewed the cap and put the bottle to his nostrils. He was greeted by an unpleasant smell which convinced him that I was telling the truth. A few minutes later, I was able to hurry away with precious chalk marks on my baggage.

declare /dɪ'kleə/: to tell a custom s official that you are carrying goodson which you should pay tax when you enter a country 〔向海关官员〕申报〔应征税的物品〕，文中to declare为动词不定式作定语，修饰nothing
【语法小学堂】Even really honest people are often made to feel guilty.当中语法点是：感官动词see, hear, feel, notice, hear或者使役动词let, make, have等后面跟不定式作宾补时省略to，但被动语态需要恢复to。如：I heard my brother sing a song yesterday. 被动：My brother was heard to singing a song yesterday.举一反三，句子的主动语态是：The Customs Officers make the really honest people feel guilty.
hardened /'hɑːdənd/: If you describe someone as hardened, you mean that they have had so much experience of something bad or unpleasant that they are no longer affected by it in the way that other people would be. (因经历过很多艰苦而)铁石心肠的; 麻木不仁的；老练的；有经验的，如：hardened politicians. 麻木不仁的政客。
professional /prə'feʃənəl/: relating to a job that needs special education and training 职业的，专业的，如：It is essential to get good professional advice . 获得有用的专业指导非常重要
smuggler /'smʌglɚ/: someone who takes something illegally from one country to another走私者，如：a drug smuggler 毒品走私者

dreadful /'dredfəl/：extremely unpleasant糟糕透顶的，极其讨厌的，如：We’ve had some dreadful weather lately. 最近我们这里的天气糟透了。

The unpleasant smell convinced him the writer telling the truth, so he left him pass through Customs.
