Why Do Fashions Change Over Time?

When you're deciding what to wear, what do you think about? What things are important to you? Why did you choose the clothes you have? All of these questions revolve around the world of fashion.

选衣服穿时，你会考虑什么？你认为哪些因素最重要？你当时为什么买下这些衣服？这些问题的答案都与时尚有关。

Fashion refers to the styles of dress that are currently popular; it always changes!

时尚是指当前流行的服装款式；它总是处在变化之中！

In the 1960s and 1970s, hippies made bell-bottomed blue jeans popular. In the 1980s, Michael Jackson made parachute pants all the rage.

上世纪60至70年代，嬉皮士带火了牛仔喇叭裤；80年代，迈克尔·杰克逊又让降落伞裤风靡一时。

Why do fashions change? The answer is probably as simple as the fact that people change.

为什么时尚会变？答案可能很简单：因为人在变。

People are influenced greatly by popular culture, including musicians, movie stars, as well as popular films and television shows. We also are influenced by the fashion industry's advertising.

The stars are always searching for a new angle to maintain their popularity. Often these new angles come in the form of new clothing or hairstyles.

When people see these new styles, they often want to imitate their favorite stars. To do so, they seek out the latest fashions — clothes, shoes, jewelry and the like — to make themselves look like the people they want to imitate. In this way, fashions evolve and constantly change over time.

人们看到自己喜欢的明星的新造型，通常会去模仿。为此，他们寻找最新的流行服饰——衣服、鞋子、珠宝等——以使自己看起来像他们想模仿的明星。通过这种方式，时尚随着时间的流逝不断发展变化。

And it's been happening for hundreds of years! Ever since clothes were invented, they've been used as a way to express something about oneself.
