Head and neck anatomy, Lymphatic
Primary lymph node -secondary lymph node and ends up in the venous circulation
- Superficial lymph nodes
a. Submandibular nodes:
i. Beneath the angle of the mandible
ii. Secondary node: the submandibular nodes drain into the deep cervical lymph nodes.
iii. Tissues drained include the lower eyelids, nose, cheek, maxillary sinus, upper lip, palate, sublingual and submandibular glands, tongue body, all of the maxillary teeth except the third molar, and all of the mandibular teeth except the incisors.
b. Submental nodes:
i. Beneath the chin
ii. Secondary node: lymph from the submental lymph nodes drains into the submandibular or deep cervical lymph nodes.
iii. Tissues drained in
iv. clude the lower lip, mandibular incisors, anterior floor the mouth, tip of the tongue, and the chin.
c. Parotid (preauricular) nodes
i. Surface of the parotid gland.
ii. Secondary node: deep cervical lymph nodes.
iii. Tissues drained include the scalp, eyelids, external ear, and lacrimal gland.

d. Mastoid (postauricular) nodes:
i. Adjacent to the mastoid process.
ii. Secondary node: deep cervical nodes.
iii. Tissues drained include the scalp and external ear.
- Deep lymph nodes
a. Retropharyngeal nodes
i. Retropharyngeal space
ii. Secondary nodes: superior deep cervical nodes
iii. Tissues drained include the hard and soft palate, middle ear, external auditory meatus, paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx, and posterior nasal cavity.
- Deep parotid nodes.
a. Located within the parotid gland
b. Secondary node: deep cervical nodes
c. Tissues drained include the parotid gland and middle ear
- Deep cervical node
a. The chain of deep cervical nodes extends vertically down the entire length of the neck. They receive lymph from both superficial and deep lymph nodes
b. Termination
i. The left deep cervical chains from the left jugular lymph trunk, which terminates in the thoracic duct
ii. The right deep cervical chains form the right jugular lymph trunk, which terminates in the right lymphatic duct.
