Sonnet 19: The basic attraction

Had I the power of God, then I would soar

above the earth, fulfill my heart’s desire:

To th’end of universe and time explore;

To th’answer ultimate of life inquire.

I shall observe the fundamental force

attracting all your particles to mine.

Since nature’s hand at first did them divorce,

wherefore the paths of theirs anon entwine?

I’ll seek from the Beginning to the End

and find those who expanded must collapse.

The atoms which make us from one did rend.

To one they’ll reunite as years elapse.

In case the heat will die, we’re part’d for aye.

let us the force divine of science obey.
