Highlights from Day3
In these pages, I learned that great creators don’t necessarily have the deepest expertise but rather seek out the broadest perspectives.
1.not A but rather B:提出不同或相反的观点,相比A更倾向于B。
rather是一个我很早就知道但一直不太会用的用法,用来否定一项并肯定一项很实用。
比如墙面不是白的,而是灰的,可以说:The walls were not white, but rather a sort of dirty grey.
2.seek out:找到,找出,to try to find someone or something, especially when this is difficult.
例句:Our mission is to seek out the enemy and destroy them.
3.broad:很多的,丰富的,广泛的,including many different kinds of things or people,可以与wide做同义替换。
例句:The show aims to reach the broadest possible audience.
I saw how success is not usually attained by being ahead of everyone else but by waiting patiently for the right time to act. And to my utter shock, I learned that procrastinating can be good.
4.attain:获得,to succeed in achieving something after trying for a long time,可以与achieve/accomplish做同义替换。
例句:More women are attaining positions of power.
5.to my utter shock:让我感到震惊的是…utter表示十足的、彻底的,可以放在名词前面起强调作用。
造句:To my utter shock, he’s a gay!
Anyone who has ever worked with me knows how much I hate leaving things to the last minute, how I always think that anything that can be done should be done right away. Mark Zuckerberg, along with many others, will be pleased if I can let go of the relentless pressure I feel to finish everything early—and, as Adam points out, it might just help me and my teams achieve better results.
6.leave things to the last minute:留在最后(不得不做的时候)再做,表示拖延。
造句:I'm a thoroughly procrastinator, I leave everything to the last minute, and I hate myself for doing so.
7.relentless:没完没了的,something bad that is relentless continues without ever stopping or getting less severe,可以与endless做同义替换。
想说一个不停哭的小婴儿,可以说:the relentless crying of a small baby
