胡马来，饮淮浦。

The barbarian invaded, occupying our territories.

春燕归，巢江树。

The swallows came back in the spring, but they could only nest in the trees beside the river, cuz all the houses had been burnt out.

石头城，立不住。

We could scarcely defense our capital.

狼居胥，在何处？

How could we chase away all the intruders?

耕问奴，织问婢，

The peasants asked the servants, the weavers asked the maids,

谁遣书生论兵事？

who had empowered the military leadership to an egg-headed guy?

万里长城元自弃，

We had destroyed the best defence ourselves.

生不逢，檀道济。

We could barely see the day that our nation gets united.
