单词

• bumpy
  道路崎岖不平的，旅途颠簸的
     ……a hot and bumpy ride across the desert……
     一次炎热而又颠簸的沙漠之行。

• travel-sick
  晕车的，晕船的，晕机的。如果要表示名词，则为 travel sickness 或 motion sickness。

• campsite
  野营地，度假营地

• exhale
  呼气，吐出（肺中的空气、烟等）

• torch
  火把，火炬，也可表示手电筒（美式英语中多用flashlight）

有一个很有意思的短语：

   Leaders in the mountains carried the torch of Greek independence.
   山里的领导人仍在为希腊的独立而坚持斗争。

• giggle
  （因感到有趣、窘迫或紧张而）咯咯地笑，傻笑；也可作名词表示趣事，玩笑，傻笑。
     I might buy one for a friend's birthday as a giggle.
     我可能会买一件送给朋友当生日礼物，逗他开心。
     *The girls *giggled at the joke.
     女孩们让这笑话逗得咯咯笑。

• funny
  除了表示有趣的，还可以表示奇怪的，古怪的，令人困惑的。
     He made funny faces to amuse the children.
     他做鬼脸逗孩子们开心。
     The funny thing is that it never happened again after that.
     奇怪的是从那以后这事就再也没有发生过。

• shipmate
  同船的船员，同船的水手

• briny
  多盐分的，很咸的

• first mate
  （商船上的）大副

• hallway
  大楼里的走廊，过道，房子或公寓的门厅。

• power cut
  供电中断，停电（的一段时间），美式英语中多用outage

• cellar
  地窖，地下室。美国的电梯按钮中的“C”一般就代表地下室；也有的按钮上是“B”，即basement，“B1”代表地下一层，“B2”代表地下二层。

短语

• make one's fortune
  某人发了大财。fortune除了表示财富，还可以表示命运，机会，运气等意思。
  比如给某人算命，tell sb's fortune。

字面意思是命运向某人微笑，潜在的意思即某人得到了命运的眷顾（走好运），是非常文艺的说法。
   When fortune smiled on him, he made the most of it.
   当好运来临时，他充分把握住了。

• for good
  永远，永久
     The days of big-time racing at Herne Hill had gone for good……
     在赫恩山举行盛大赛马会的日子早已一去不复返了。
