get on a roll means to be experiencing a period of success at what you are doing.

set the record straight means to give people the correct information about sth in order to make it clear that what they previously believed was in fact wrong.
e.g. Although he butchered a word, he wan't want to set the record straight.

And what this whole episode has taught me is that every once in a while, it's not such a bad idea to listen to your mother.
