Japan's government releases the nation's latest tourism numbers today, amid signs of fatigue with the unfamiliar influx of foreigners: a record 28.7m visited last year, a three-fold rise since 2008.Over the first eight months of this year, more than 20 million global tourists have traveled to Japan. Although the booming tourism industry has stimulated Japan's economy, the influx of tourists has overrun the island nation. In some of Japan's hottest cities, local residents moan the problem of tourists, and even think it is a "tourist pollution".
In order to alleviate the pressure of economic recession caused by the disappearance of demographic dividend is an important reason for the opening up of inbound tourism. The effect of tourism consumption to stimulate the economy is immediately exciting. In the long run, it is not clear whether such stimulus can be sustained in resource-poor island countries and become the fundamental factor for Japan's economic development. After all, the uniqueness of Japanese culture is one of the foundations of economic take-off. Tourism has not created the glory of Japan's economy, and sacrificing the tranquility of local culture for short-term economic growth may not be worth the loss.Maintaining the people's well-being and long-term stability, limiting the number of people entering the country, promoting Japanese culture among foreigners, and balancing the internal causes and external forces of economic development may avoid going too much of a good thing.
